» ¾> a ¾? π ψ *t η An electrical terminal AMP INCORPORATED Cs 30283 31947/2 It is frequentl required in the telephone industry to interconnect substantial numbers of individual wires to two or more telephone cablea at distribution points for telephone circuits* When producing such interconnections, it is usually necessary to trim to length the individual wires whiuh have been separated from the cables to avoid the presence of trailing wire ends and slack portions of wire. It is also desirable that the interconnections between the wires should be made rapidly, and, in the interests of economy, with the aid only of simple tooling.
Although there is disclosed in the British Patent specification KQ. 615,737, a simple form of electrical terminal comprising a slot into which an insulated wire can be forced so that the edges of the slot pierce the insulation of the wire to make electrically conductiv contact with the electrically conductive core of the wire, this terminal comprises no provision for trimming the wire upon insertion of the wire into the slot.

The connector according to the first embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to Figures 1 to 12. As shown in Figures 1 - 3 the connector, which is referenced 2, comprises a base 4, a wire retaining frame 6 (best seen in Figure 2) and a cover 8 the base, the frame and the cover having been moulded from an insulating material for example acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin, which has a high impact strength. Electrical terminals 10 are clamped between the base 4 and the fra e 6 , as best three substantially parallel plates 12 , 14 and 16 connected by bights 18 and 20. The plates 14 and 16 have rows of slots 22a, 24a and 26a and 22b, 24b and 26b respectively which intersect the bight 20, each of these slots having a mouth 28 and a working portion 25 which is considerably narrower than the mouth, disposed between the mouth 28 and the base 27 of the slot. The portions 25 of the slots 22a, 24a and 26a of the plate 14 are of smaller width than the diameter of the electrically conductive core 32 of an insulated wire 34 (Figures 6 and 7) to be engaged in the slots. The portions 25 of the slots 22b, 24b and 26b of the plate 16 are wider than portions 25 of the slots 22a, 24a and 26a of the plate 14 being narrower than the diameter of the insulation of the wire 34 but wider than the diameter of the core 32. The plate 12 of the terminal 10 is substantially lower than the plates 14 and 16 so that the upper (as seen in Figure 3) edge 30 (which forms a wire severing edge as described below) of the plate 12 extends across the slots 22a, 24a and 26a at a level just below (as seen in Figure 3) their mouths 28. The bight 18 connecting the plates 12 and 14 has feet 17 extending from either end of the bight 18, the plate 16 having at either end similar feet 19, each extending parallel to and at the level of one of the feet 17.
As shown in Figure 6 , a wire insertion and a trimming tool 35 has a tool head 36 mounted on a shank 38. The shank 38 may have a handle or may be adapted to be driven by a driving device, for example a trip hammer as described in the specification of our United States patent No. 2,774,133.
The lower (as seen in Figure 6) end of the tool head 36 has depending arms 42,44,46 the width of the central arm 12 and 14 of the terminal 10 and having an end recess 47 of slightly greater width than the diameter of the insulation of the wire 34. The arm 44 has a similar recess 48 and is spaced from the arm 42 by a distance slightly exceeding the thickness of the plate 12. The arm 46 may be of any convenient thickness and is spaced from the arm 42 by a distance slightly exceeding that between the outer faces of the plates 14 and 16 so that the bight 20 can be received between the arms 42 and 46.
To connect the wire 34 to the terminal 10, the wire is first positioned in the mouths 28 of two aligned slots of the plates 14 and 16 of the terminal 10, in this example the slots 22a and 22b, and the tool 35 is positioned in alignment above these slots as shown in Figure 6 with the arm 42 is alignment with the space between the plates 12 and 14 of the terminal 10. The tool is then advanced towards the terminal 10 so that the portion of the wire 34 which extends leftwardly (as seen in Figure 6) of the plate 12 is sheared as shown in Figure 7, substantially in the plane of the plate 12 between the wire severing edge 30 of the portion 12 and the transverse edge (not shown) of the recess 48 of the arm 44, the wire 34 being pushed down by the transverse edge of the recess 47 of the arm 42 and by the arm 46 into the portions 25 of the slots 22a and 22b towards the base 27 of these slots. The edges of the portion 25 of the slot 22a penetrate the insulation of the wire 34 and deform the core 32 of the wire 34 to oval shape as shown in Figure 8 so as to make electrically conductive contact with the core 32 of the wire 34. The edges of the portion 25 of the slot 22b however penetrate the insulation of the wire 34 (Figure 9) but do not deform the core 32 of the wire wider than the diameter of the core 32. The plate 16 in effect acts as a strain relief member to prevent the deformed and thus workhardened part of the wire core 32 in the portion 25 of the slot 22a from being fractured as a result of movement of the part of the wire 34 which extends rlghtwardly (as seen in Figures 6 and 7) of the plate 16.
The portions 25 of the slots of the plate 16 may, if desired, however, be dimensioned to deform the core 32, so as to provide an extra connection between the terminal 10 and the core 32.
As shown in Figures 2 to 5 , the base 4 comprises a floor 52 having spaced parallel ribs 50 which extend from either face of the floor 52» The base 4 also has sidewalls 56 which also extend both above and below (as seen in Figure 4) the floor 52. The floor 52 is thus supported above the surface of a mounting panel (not shown) supporting the base 4. The base 4 may be secured to the mounting panel for example by fasteners extending through openings 57 (Figures 1 and 2) in the floor 52. Each corner of the base 4 has a pair of upstanding columns 59 each pair of columns defining a recess 58 for receiving a cable 82 (Figures 11 and 12) comprising a plurality of wires 34.
The frame 6 has spaced parallel ribs 60, as best seen in Figure 2, connected by webs 62 to define wire-receiving channels 67, the internal widths of the ribs 60 slightly exceeding pre-external widths of the ribs 50 of the base 4. The upper (as seen in Figures 2 to 5) walls 66 of the ribs 60 have parallel spaced rectangular openings 64 through which the terminals 10 can be inserted from the underside of the frame 6 until the feet 17 and 19 of the terminals 10 engage with the undersides of the walls 66 thus preventing further passage terminals 10 have been inserted through the openings 64 the frame 6 is assembled to the base 4 so that latch arms 68 depending from the walls 66 of the ribs 60 pass through openings 70 in the floor 52 of the base 4, so that hooks 69 on the latch arms 68 engage the underside of the floor 52, as best seen in Figure 5, to secure the frame 6 to the base 4 The individual wires 34 of the cables 82 received in the recesses 58 defined by the columns 59 are led to appropriate terminals 10 along the channels 67 defined by the ribs 60, and are electrically connected to appropriate terminals 10 by means of the tool 35 or a plurality of these tools in the manner described above, to produce desired inter connections between the individual wires 34. The cables 82 are then clamped in position in the recesses 58 by clamp members 84, as shown in Figures 11 and 12. Each member 84 has on its underside a boss 86 having a concave surface 88 shaped to the circumference of the cable 82, shoulders 90 of the member 84 engaging beneath internal shoulders 92 of the corresponding pair of columns 59. As shown in Figures 1 and 2 , the cover 8 has sidewalls 72 having recesses 74 to receive the cables 82.
The cover 8 is now secured to the base 4 by latch arms 78 formed integrally with the sidewalls 56 of the base 4 and having hooked ends which extend through openings 76 in the cover 8 and engage shoulders 80 formed exteriorly on the sidewalls of the cover 8, as shown in Figures 1 and 4.
The connector 2 is arranged to contain 50 terminals 10 so as to be capable of inter-connecting 150 individual wires 34. sired ones of the terminals 10 ma be in r ec 7588Y other suitable means.
Each terminal 10 is made by stamping and forming a sheet metal blank shown in Figure 10 in which the parts of the terminal to be formed by corresponding parts of the blank bear the same reference numerals as those used above in connection with the terminals 10, but with the addition of a prime symbols As will be apparent from Figure 10, the blank can be made of a width to provide a terminal for inter-connecting any desired number of wires.
The connector according to the second embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to Figures 13 to 16 * As shown in Figure 13, the connector, which is generally referenced 96, comprises a base 98 for mounting against a wall (not shown) and having a series of openings 100 for receiving cables 101 (only one of which is shown in Figure 13) A stack of inter-engaging modular insulating blocks 104 is secured centrally to the base 98 and being topped by a further modular insulating block 116. The blocks 104 are identical with one another. Each block 104 and 116 has formed integrally therewith two latch arms 106 having hooked ends 108. The ends 108 of all the modular blocks excepting those of the block 104 adjacent the base 98 engage in recesses 110 in the next adjacent block 104. The end 108 of the arms 106 of the block 104 adjacent the base 98 engage in recesses 102 of the base 98 to secure the stack of modular blocks to the base 98. The blocks 104 and 116 have slots 112 which co-operate to receive shanks 114 each carrying at either end an electrical terminal 150 of double terminal devices. As shown in Figures 14 and 15 each terminal 150 is substantially identical with the terminal 10 described above β The parts of the terminals 150 are 7588Y 3, 6 and 7 but with the addition of a prime symbol. A sheet metal blank from which each pair of terminals 150 can be formed is shown in Figure 16. The length of each shank 114 is substantially equal to the thickness of the blocks 104 and 116 so that the terminals 10 engage and project from either side of the stack of modular blocks.
In use/ the cables 101 are led through the openings 100 and individual wires of these cables are connected by means of the tool 35 or a plurality of these tools to appropriate terminals 150.
A terminal 10 as described above could be modified for use as a printed circuit terminal/extending the plate 16 of the terminal to form a tongue for insertion through an aperture in a printed circuit panel, for soldering to one or more printed conductors of the panel.
A double terminal device shown in Figures 17 to 21, which is an alternative form of double terminal device for the connector of Figure 13, comprises a shank 114a having a notch 117 defining a neck for reception in a pair of the slots 112. Terminals 150a formed integrally with either end of the shank 114a are angled with respect to the shank 114a. The terminals 150a are intended to be disposed in the slots 112 so that the terminals 150a are directed away from the base 98, to facilitate the connection of the wires to the terminals 150a. The terminals 15oa differ from the terminals 150 in that the mouths of the slots of the terminal have portions 120 of reducedwidth, the width of each of these portions being less than the diameter of insulated wires 34a to be received in the slots. Inwardly of the portions 120 however the slots widen at 122 to a width which slightly exceeds the wire diameter, as will be 7588Y positioned in the portions 122 of the slots before being pushed home into the slots and severed (as shown in Figures 20 and 21) , with the aid of the tool 35.
The connector according to the third embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to Figures 22 to 24.
The connector shown in Figure 22 includes double terminal devices each comprising a shank 114b having formed integrally with one end a terminal 150b and with the other end a terminal 150c. The terminal 150c is substantially identical with the terminal 150a described above but is not angled with respect to the shank of the terminal device. Plates 14b and 16b of the terminal 150b, these plates corresponding to the plates 14 and 16 of the terminal 10 described above, each have however only one wire receiving slot 132, a plate 12a of the terminal 150b, corresponding to the plate 12 of the terminal 10, having a wire receiving slot 134, aligned with the slots 132, to receive as shown in Figure 22, a wire when fully inserted into the slots 132. The shanks 114b of the terminal devices have enlarged width portions 126 trapped in substantially cross-shaped recess in insulating blocks 170 which are superposed with insulating blocks 180 having flat surfaces which engage the blocks 170.
By virtue of the slots 134, wires inserted into the slots 132 of the terminals 150b with the aid of the tool 35, are not severed against the plate 12a but are pushed by the transverse edge of the arm 44 of the tool 35 into the slots 134. As shown in Figure 22, a single wire can thus be employed commonly to connect a plurality of the double terminal devices through the terminals 150b of these 7588Y posed relationships by co-operating latch arms and recesses (not shown) similar to those described above with reference to Figures 13 and 14. The blocks 170 and 180 may be arranged on a base (not shown) similar to the base 98.
The blocks 170 and 180 could be replaced by blocks similar to the blocks 104 and 116, the shanks 114b of the terminal devices being replaced by shanks similar to the shanks 114.
Figure 24 shows a blank for forming a double terminal device according to Figures 22 and 23.
