[0003] There are many commercially available website building systems and other interactive application building tools that can be used to create and edit websites and other on- line applications. [0004] These website building systems can come in different configurations such as fully on- line website building systems which are hosted on a server or servers connected to the internet and which are accessed using internet communication protocols such as hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). For a partially online system, the website editing is performed locally on the user’s machine and is later uploaded to a central server or servers for deployment. [0006] Website building systems have internal data architecture in order to organize data and elements within the system. This architecture may be different from the external view of the site in question as seen by the user and may also differ from the way typical hypertext markup language (HTML) pages are sent to the browser. For example, the internal data architecture can contain additional properties for each element on the page (creator, creation time, access permissions, links to templates etc.) which are essential for editing and maintaining the site within the website building system, but are not externally visible to the end-user (or even to some editing users). [0007] Components may be content-less such as a star-shape which does not have any internal content (through it has color, size, position and some other attributes) or may have internal content, such as a text paragraph component, whose internal content includes the displayed text, as well as font, formatting and layout information. Such customization may be implemented by creating a modified version of the template (which is distinct and separate from the template). Such third party applications may be included in the website building system design environment or may be purchased (or otherwise acquired) separately through a number of distribution mechanisms, such as from an application store (AppStore) integrated into the website building system, or from a separate, web-based or standalone application repository (or AppStore) operated by the website building systems (WBS) vendor or by another entity. The website building system may support multiple uses of third party applications at a number of levels, such as allowing a single third party application instance in the entire web site; allowing instances of multiple third party applications to be created inside the web site (but not more than one instance of any given third party application) and allowing multiple instances of multiple third party applications to be created, but no more than one instance per a given page. Claims (11)
1. 1. A website building system, the system comprising: at least one processor; and a unit running on said at least one processor for creating and handling activity streams, an activity stream being a chain of data associated with an identifiable contact extracted from activity messages having an activity data structure comprising data, sent between said website building system and associated third party applications; said unit comprising: a stream merger to merge data from at least one activity message to an existing activity stream and to merge two activity streams into a single activity stream; and at least one database to store said activity streams for use by said website building system.
2. The system according to claim 1 and also comprising a stream creator to identify said identifiable contact associated with said at least one activity message and to create an activity stream of data from said at least one activity message if no associated contact exists.
3. The system according to claim 1 wherein said stream merger comprises: an activity to stream merger to merge said data from said at least one activity message into said existing activity stream associated with said identifiable contact; and a stream-to-stream merger to merge at least two activity streams into a single activity stream.
4. The system according to claim 3 wherein said stream to stream merger comprises: a horizontal stream merger to merge said at least two activity streams according to an identified common contact; and a vertical stream merger to merger an activity stream created for an anonymous contact with an activity stream associated with a registered contact user upon a login or registration which may connect the two.
5. The system according to claim 1 and also comprising a log creator to log said activity streams with said data from said at least one activity message into said at least one database.
6. The system according to claim 1 wherein said at least one activity message has a standardized format defined by at least one of: a predefined schema, inheritance, a call back link, encoded and defined by said associated third party applications or based on external formal, industry or de-facto standard.
7. A method for a website building system, the method comprising: creating and handling activity streams of data, an activity stream being a chain of data associated with an identifiable contact from activity messages having an activity data structure comprising data sent between said website building system and associated third party applications, said creating and handling activity streams comprising: merging data from at least one activity message to an existing activity stream associated with said identifiable contact; merging two activity streams into a single activity stream; and storing said activity streams for use by said website building system in at least one database.
8. The method according to claim 7 and also comprising: identifying said identifiable contact associated with said at least one activity message; and creating an activity stream of data from said at least one activity message if no associated contact exists for said at least one activity message.
9. The method according to claim 7 wherein said merging two activity streams into a single activity stream comprises: merging at least two activity streams according to an identified common contact; and merging an activity stream created for an anonymous contact with an activity stream associated with a registered contact user upon a login or registration which may connect the two.
10. The method according to claim 7 and also comprising logging activity streams with said data from said at least one activity message into said at least one database.
11. The method according to claim 7 wherein said at least one activity message has a standardized format defined by at least one of: a predefined schema, inheritance, a call back link, encoded and defined by said associated third party applications or based on external formal, industry or de-facto standard.
