Description
PRACTICE LET AND CARTR IDGE AMMUNITION ABSTRACT A cartridge blank has a simulated projectile which can collapse telescopically into the propellant charge casing using breech loading so that a cartridge of reduced length is ejected after the The weapon raay be adapted by means of a barrel insert having a slope engaging a bevel on the simulated 1 Blank or Dumrnv Cartridge Ammunition This invention relates to a dummy or practice or blank cartridge mainly for use on manoeuvres and for training This invention also relates to a weapon adapted to use such Blank cartridges are generally all produced with a one piece case which forms the propellant charge casing and simulates the projectile in such a way that the blanks at least as far as the external shape is the live ammunition which the weapon is designed to The which may consist of metal or may have a separate base to accommodate the firing cap for the propellant charge contained blank cartridges of this can cause problems when ejected through an ejection passage inasmuch as in contrast to live of which only the propellant charge casing has to be they retain their entire length after being fired and can thus cause operational One object of this invention is therefore to provide a blank cartridge as well as a blank cartridge casing suitable for the said blank cartridge by which the length 2 of the cartridge to be ejected after firing can be reduced in such a way as to substantially avoid operational faults due to excessively long According to this invention there is provided a cartridge blank having a propellant charge casing and a simulated projectile with an ogival nose the propellant charge casing having a mouth which accommodates the simulated projectile formed as a separate the said simulated projectile provided with a circumferential bevel behind the nose and being detachably connected with the mouth in such a way then when the bevel contacts an abutment in a barrel the simulated cartridge is pushed back into the propellant charge According to this invention there is also provided a barrel having a breech and an wherein the barrel has a slope forming an abutment a bevel on a simulated projectile of a blank said bevel immediately following an ogival end portion of the simulated the said slope being situated at that distance from the insertion end of the breech which corresponds to the length of a propellant charge casing of a live This invention is further described and illustrated with reference to an example illustrated in the 3 accompanying Figures la to le show a blank cartridge and a blank cartridge tube in different phases during use from the insertion of the cartridge using breech energy to Figure 2 shows a simulated projectile for the cartridge illustrated in Figures la to and Figures 3 and 4 show a blank cartridge before and after The blank cartridge illustrated comprises a propel lant charge casing 2 which accommodates a simulated projectile The propellant charge casing 2 may for a case of a kind which is also used for normal live ammunition and which corresponds in shape to such a case and having a mouth to accommodate the simulated projectile 3 and a slanting shoulder 5 designed to bear against a corresponding shoulder 6 in breech 7 of a practice weapon barrel The simulated projectile 3 includes a cylindrical portion 9 provided at each end with a collar the two collars being equal in while the portion 9 si uated between has a somewhat smaller diameter than the collars The rear collar 10 is accommodated in the mouth 4 and is attached to this for 4 by an adhesive or twist joint At the front end of the simulated projectile 3 is an ogival end portion 11 which has a circumferential bevel 12 at an angle of with respect to the axis of the The bevel 12 is immediately followed by a short relief 13 preceding the first collar The ogival end portion 11 is in this particular of segments which are pointed at the exposed end and which open when a certain preselected gas pressure is The barrel 7 has an insert 15 with a slope 17 to receive the bevel 12 and having ramp sections 16 arranged The slope 17 is positioned a distance from the insertion end of the cartridge breech 7 which corresponds to the insertion length of a propellant charge casing of a live projectile of the calibre of the barrel so that when the cartridge 1 is inserted as far as it will go the mouth 4 of the propellant charge casing 2 engages the slope If the cartridge 1 is now inserted in the barrel 8 Figure the bevel 12 first of all engages the slope 17 The force generated when the bevel 12 moves u onto the slope 17 breaks the connection between the propellant charge casing 2 and the simulated projectile 3 and thrusts the latter telescopical into 5 the propellant charge casing 2 until the mouth 4 of the propellant charge casing 2 engages with the ramp sections 16 of the slope The insertion is facilitated by the reduction in friction due to the reduced diameter of the cylindrical section until front collar 10 engages the mouth In this process as the mouth 4 is slightly deformed over the front relief 13 on the simulated projectile the said projectile on the propellant charge casing 2 is prevented from dropping After the firing the cartridge 1 is ejected and as the simulated projectile 3 has been pushed back as far as the ogival end portion the length of the cartridge is substantially equal to that of the propellant charge casing 1 that is the length of the cartridge 1 during loading largely corresponds to that of live while in the ejection the length largely corresponds to the length of a propellant charge casing of live ammunition thus preventing operating failures occurring in the ejection and caused by excessive PRACTICE AND CART AMMUNITION ABSTRACT A cartridge blank has a simulated projectile which can collapse telescopically into the propellant charge casing using breech loading energy
