Description
Reversibly Lockable Identification Apparatus Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a reversibly lockable and wearable identifier of a person who may be in need of assistance.
Background of the Invention Medical talisman jewellery in the form of bracelets or pendants are well known and recognised internationally by emergency services. The jewellery instantly provides vital information about the wearer in case of an accident, illness or emergency. It can contain information such as the wearer’s name, emergency contact details, allergies, blood group, cardiac status, diabetes status etc.). Common to all these jewellery items is the presence of a watertight and heat resistant capsule to keep vital information about the wearer stored securely on a piece of non—so|ub|e paper, which is also easily accessible in an emergency. However, medical talisman jewellery is readily removable by the wearer.
Summary of the Invention According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a reversibly lockable identification apparatus comprising an information display member attached to a strap member whose first end and second end respectively comprise a locking member and a receiving member, wherein the receiving member is adapted to receive the locking member in a sliding arrangement between a plurality of locking points disposed at different distances from the second end of the strap member; and wherein the locking member is adapted to be rotated by a key between a first open configuration and a second locked configuration; wherein the open configuration permits the locking member to be moved between the locking points and the locked configuration establishes a locked engagement between the locking member and the receiving member at a particular locking point to prevent further movement of the locking member in the absence of the key Preferably, the receiving member comprises a central channel engraved into the second end of the strap member and a plurality of indents further engraved into the second end of the strap member and radiating at regular intervals from the central channel in a substantially perpendicular arrangement therefrom.
Preferably, the locking member comprises a locking screw penetrating through the first end of the strap member, wherein a first end of the locking screw comprises a cap member adapted to fit the key and a second opposing end of the locking screw comprises a crossbar member adapted to fit into the central channel and the indents in the receiving member.
Desirably, the information display member is adapted to display code information to permit secure access to contact information of a person.
Desirably, the reversibly lockable identification apparatus further comprises a locking mount member adapted in use to hold the first end and the second end of the strap member in close proximity, wherein the locking mount member further comprises an aperture to permit access to the locking member by the key.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a use of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus of the first aspect to enable identification of one or more carers of a wearer by wrapping the reversibly lockable identification apparatus around a part of the wearer to form a loop in which the first end of the strap member is brought into close proximity with the second end of the strap member engaging the locking member with a key to rotate the locking member into the open configuration and adjusting the reversibly lockable identification apparatus to snugly fit the wearer by sliding the locking member between the plurality of locking points of the receiving member to increase or decrease the diameter of the loop; engaging the locking member with a key, on achieving the required fit to the wearer, to rotate the locking member into the closed configuration to prevent removal of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus from the wearer; and providing code information to the information display member to enable a user to obtain information relating to the contact details of the or each person caring for the wearer.
By providing access to contact information, the reversibly lockable identification apparatus significantly reduces the time from a person being found to their being re- united with carers or family members. The lost person can be comforted and reassured whilst the responsible person will feel relief knowing their person is in safe hands and no longer lost.
Similarly, the inability of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus to be unlocked without the key, prevents the accidental removal of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus; or potentially prevents the removal of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus without the knowledge of a responsible family member or carer.
Description and Drawings An embodiment of the invention is herein described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a partial exploded perspective view of the components of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus in an unconnected arrangement; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a key and a strap member coupled with a locking mount member of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus; Figure 3 is perspective view of a first end and a second end of the strap member, aligned within the locking mount member; and Figure 4 is a partial exploded perspective view of the arrangement of Figure 3, wherein the first and second ends of the strap member are aligned so that a locking screw penetrating the first end is aligned with a sliding groove element in the second end.
Detailed Description While certain specific features are illustrated in the above figures, those skilled in the art will appreciate from the present disclosure that various other features have not been illustrated for the sake of brevity and so as not to obscure more pertinent aspects of the implementations disclosed herein.
Referring to Figure 1, the preferred embodiment of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 comprises an elongate strap member 12, a locking mount member 14 and a key 16. The elongate strap member 12 comprises a first face 18 and an opposing second face (not shown). A first end 20 of the strap member 12 is punctured by a locking screw 22. The puncture hole (not shown) to accommodate the locking screw 22 is formed by post—machining of the strap member 12 by drilling.
The strap member 12 is formed of silicone through compression moulding process.
The locking mount member 14 is formed by extrusion of a metallic material such as anodized aluminium or powder coated steel; and finished by tumbling to soften the locking mount member’s 14 edges. The key 16 and the locking screw 22 are formed: (a) by injection moulding of a plastics material such as Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), or glass fibre reinforced plastic (FRP); or (b) from a metal such as anodised aluminium or powder coated steel.
However, the person skilled in the art will understand that the above materials are manufacture processes are provided for example only. In particular, the present invention is in no way limited to these materials or manufacture processes. On the contrary, the lockable identification apparatus of the preferred embodiment can be made from any suitable material using any suitable manufacturing process.
The locking screw 22 comprises a cap member 24, a screw member (not shown) and a crossbar member 26. The cap member 24 comprises a plate which is dimensioned to be larger than the puncture hole (not shown) in the strap member 12.
The plate comprises a central aperture 28 dimensioned to accommodate a first end of the screw member (not shown) with enough excess space around the first end to allow it to freely rotate within the aperture 28.
The screw member (not shown) is threaded through the plate so that the first end 30 of the screw member (not shown) protrudes from the central aperture 28. The screw member (not shown) is dimensioned to fit through the puncture hole (not shown) in the strap member 12 with the cap member 24 disposed proximal to the first face of the strap member 12. The screw member (not shown) is further dimensioned so that the distance between its first end 30 and an opposing second end (not shown) is greater than the thickness of the first end 20 of the strap member 12 (i.e. the distance between the first face 18 and the second face (not shown) of the strap member 12 at its first end 20). On penetrating the strap member 12, the crossbar member 26 is fixed to the second end (not shown) of the screw member (not shown) in a substantially perpendicular arrangement thereto, so that the crossbar member 26 extends beyond the body of the strap member 12 (not shown) and is disposed proximal to the second face (not shown) of the strap member 12.
The locking mount member 14 is a hollow receptacle adapted to house the first end of the strap member 12 and a second opposing end (not shown) of the strap member 12. A top face 32 of the locking mount member 14 comprises an aperture 34 adapted in use to accommodate the cap member 24 and to permit access to the cap member 24 by the key 16. The key 16 comprises a recess (not shown) adapted to accommodate the first end 30 of the screw member (not shown) protruding from the central aperture 28 in the cap member 24.
Referring to Figure 2, in use the first end 20 of the strap member 12 is inserted into the hollow of the locking mount member 14 and arranged so that the cap member 24 housed within the recess (not shown) in the top face 32 of the locking mount member 14. The top face 32 of the locking mount member 14 also comprises an identifying marker 36 (e.g. a code or barcode etc.) for the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10. The identifying marker 36 is formed by laser engraving of the locking mount member 14 or other suitable permanent marking mechanism (e.g. printing, photolithography etc.) thereof.
Proximal to its second end 38, the strap member 12 further comprises a sliding groove element 40 etched therethrough. The sliding groove element 40 comprises a central channel 42 aligned co—axia||y with the longitudinal axis of the strap member 12. The sliding groove element 40 further comprises a plurality of indents 44 radiating from the channel 40 in a regular repeating pattern so that each indent 44 is substantially perpendicularly arranged relative to the channel 40. The indents 44 and the channel 42 are each dimensioned to accommodate the crossbar member (not shown).
Referring to Figure 3 together with Figure 4, in use, the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 is wrapped around a person’s wrist. The second end 38 of the strap member 12 is inserted into the hollow of the locking mount member 14 so that the sliding groove element 40 is aligned with the locking screw 22 through the first end 20 of the strap member 12.
The key 16 is placed over the cap member 24 of the locking screw 22 so that the key’s recess (not shown) closely fits over the first end 30 of the screw member 46.
The locking screw 22 and its crossbar member 26 are rotated between an open and a closed configuration, by rotating the key 16. In the open configuration, the crossbar member 26 is inserted into the channel 42 in a co—axia| alignment with the channel 42 to permit the crossbar member 26 to be slid along the length of the channel 42. In the closed configuration, the crossbar member 26 is moved so that it is proximal to an indent 44 and rotated into a co—axia| alignment with the indent 44, to cause the crossbar member 26 to become housed within the indent 44. To return to the open configuration, the crossbar member 26 is rotated back into a co—axia| arrangement with the channel 42.
In use, the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 is tightened around the person’s wrist or ankle by sliding the crossbar member 26 along the channel 42 until the strap member 12 is shortened or lengthened to achieve a snug fit around the person’s wrist or ankle. The strap member 12 is locked into position using the key 16 to rotate the locking screw 22 and its crossbar member 26 into the closed configuration. The key 16 is then removed from the cap member 24. The reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 cannot be unlocked without the key 16 to rotate the locking screw 22 and its crossbar member 26 into the open configuration.
The reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 is adapted to be highly visible to nearby people. More specifically, the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 may be brightly coloured and further comprise a highly visible and readily recognisable marker/logo, which enables a nearby person to easily recognise and determine the nature of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10.
When worn by a person, the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 clearly flags that the person suffers from memory issues. Thus, if a passer—by spots an unaccompanied person wearing the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 who appears to be lost, confused or otherwise distressed, the passer—by may call the emergency services and provide them with the details from the identifying marker 36 (e.g. a code or barcode etc.). Equipped with these details, the emergency services may interrogate an encrypted database comprising the contact information of the person’s family or carers. Since the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 does not show the relevant contact information and the contact information is only available to those with access to the encrypted database and the relevant code, personal data is protected. Alternatively in another embodiment, the code or barcode etc can be entered (e.g. by typing the code or scanning the barcode) by the passer—by into a software application operable on a mobile computing device and the resulting contact information displayed on the mobile computing device.
Having access to contact information means the time from a person being found to their being re—united with carers or family members can be drastically reduced. The lost person can be comforted and reassured whilst the responsible person will feel relief knowing their person is in safe hands and no longer lost.
Similarly, the inability of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 to be unlocked without the key 16, prevents the accidental removal of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10; or potentially prevents the removal of the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 without the knowledge of a responsible family member or carer.
While the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 is described above as a bracelet or anklet item, it will be understood by the skilled person that the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 is not limited to this implementation. On the contrary, the reversibly lockable identification apparatus 10 is also implementable through any vehicle which enables easy but discreet identification of a person with memory problems, for example, by a necklace piece, pin, ear—ring, or cuff link etc Modifications and alterations may be made to the above invention without departing from the scope of the invention.
