Abstract
The present invention relates to an apparatus for inclining the patient-supporting portion (4) of a raisable and lowerable hospital bed. In a scissors mechanism (6) provided between a body (2) and the patient-supporting portion (4), an arm (33) of one of the two-armed levers (8, 10) is provided with an adjustable pneumatic spring (46) for regulating the length of the arm. For this purpose the lever is formed by an outer tube (40) and by an inner tube (38) disposed slidably therein.
Description
The present invention relates to a bed, a hospital bed in 5 particular, the patient-supporting portion of which can be raised, lowered and inclined.
The patient-supporting portion of modern hospital beds can be lifted up to a higher position which is favourable for the work of the nursing staff and lowered down to a lower position which is convenient for the patient. Further, nursing of the patient may require that the whole patientsupporting portion is inclined in its longitudinal direction to lift the foot end of the bed higher than the head end, or vise versa.
In prior art hospital beds, the lifting and the lowering movement of the patient-supporting portion has been effected by various parallel mechanisms, and the inclining by means disposed between the parallel mechanism and the patientsupporting portion. Combination of the mechanisms has, however, resulted in rather complex structures.
The object of the invention is to provide a structurally simple apparatus for lifting, lowering and inclining of the patient-supporting portion of a hospital bed or a like bed.
The apparatus according to the invention is mainly characterized in that a scissors mechanism is disposed between the patient-supporting portion and. the body, the two-armed levers of the scissors mechanism being operationally connected to means regulating the length of at least one of the arms.

Preferably at least one of the levers of the scissors mechanism is composed of a pipe slidably disposed inside another pipe and connected to it via a pneumatic spring.
The invention is described in more detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:F.ig. 1 is a side view of an apparatus according to the 10 invention;

The hospital bed illustrated in Figs. 1-4 comprises a 20 body 2 and a patient-supporting portion 4 and a scissors mechanism 6 extending between the body and the patientsupporting portion. The scissors mechanism comprises a central articulated lever 8 crossed and pivotally interconnected with two articulated levers 10 with the crossed two-armed articulated levers 8 and 10 thus arranged the lever 8, located under the center line of the patientsupporting portion supports the underlay at the center area, and the two levers 10 located spaced apart from each other symmetrically on both sides of the lever 8 support the patient-supporting portion at one end area of the underlay. The upper end of the lever 8 ie pivotted on a shaft 14 supported in -shaped longitudinal bars 12 of the patient-supporting, portion, and the lower end on a shaft 22 attached to slides 20 moving in slideways 18 formed by -shaped bars 16 of the body. The upper ends of the levers 10 are pivotted on a shaft 28 supported in p814/ell slides 26 moving in elideways 24 formed by -shaped bars 12 of the patient-supporting portion, and the lower ends on a shaft 30 attached to the -shaped bar 16 of the body. Further, the levers are interconnected by an articulated joint via a shaft 32 disposed at the crossing point of the levers.
The slides 20 at the lower end of the lever 8 can be moved in the elideways 18 by means of a screw spindle 34, which moves linearly and is functionally connected to the slides and driven by a motor 36. While the slides of the lower end of the lever 8 move the slides 26 of the upper ends of the levers 10 move in their slideways in a corresponding way. When the lower ends of the levers approach each other the patient-supporting portion rises up and when they move away from each other the patient-supporting portion descends. The upper portion of the levers 10 is constituted by a square tube 38 slidably disposed in a square tube 40 serving as the center and the lower portion of the lever
. At the upper end of the outer tube 40, there are internal slide blocks 42 and at the lower end of the internal tube 38, there are external slide blocks 44 guiding the movement of the tube 38. A pneumatic spring 46 is provided inside the tubes and a piston arm 48 of the spring is connected, via a pin 50, to the inner tube 38. A pneumatic spring cylinder 52 ie connected, via a sleeve 54 surrounding said cylinder, to the outer tube 40. In the end of the cylinder, there is a threaded pin 56 connected to a flange 58 in the sleeve. The sleeve 54 is connected to the outer tube via a shaft 60.
The cylinder of the pneumatic spring is formed by an inner tube 62 and an outer tube 64. At'the end of the cylinder, there is a valve 66 for changing the position of a piston

IE 91439 and gas can flow from one space to another via a passage 72 between the outer tube and the inner tube and via ducts 74 and 76 at the ends of the cylinder whereby the piston can move. The valve is opened by turning the shaft 60 and an eccentric means 78 connected to said shaft. When the valve is closed the flow of gas is prevented. The pneumatic spring is filled with pressurized gas such as nitrogen and possibly also with oil by a method know per se.
The distance between the shafts 28 and 32 of the levers 10, i.e. the length of the upper arm 33 of the lever is thu6 easily changeable with the pneumatic spring. When the length of the arm is increased the end of the patientsupporting portion by the extendable upper arm rises up and when the length of the arm is reduced the end of the patient-supporting portion descends. The lifting means is favourably located at the foot end of the patientsupporting portion since the head end of the patientsupporting portion must be separately turnable in different positions.
The thrust of the pneumatic spring is chosen to correspond to the weight of the foot end portion of the patientsupporting portion which ensures balance of the patient25 supporting portion and it is equally easy to change the longitudinal inclination of the patient-supporting portion in both directions.
Since, according to the invention, the lifting up and lowering down of the patient-supporting portion takes place by a scissors mechanism, the patient-supporting portion does not move in longitudinal direction during the lifting or the descending operation.

IE 91439 according to the invention is achieved by a simple lever mechanism.
It ie obvious that the pneumatic spring can be replaced by 5 other means effecting a change in the length, e. g. by a screw mechanism as in the alternative embodiment illustrated in Fig. 5. In this embodiment, the length of the lever arms is changed by shifting the crossing point of the levers.
A slideway 80 is formed in the lever 8 and a slide 82 movable in the direction of the lever is provided in the slideway. The slide is provided with a shaft 32 to which the levers 10 are journalled. The slide is connected to a screw spindle 84 which moves linearly and is driven by a motor 86. When the slide is moved the lengths of the lever upper arm 88 and the lever lower arm 90 are changed and the upper end of the lever 10 rises and descends whereby the patient-supporting portion is inclined in the desired direction.
Although only a hospital bed is mentioned in the description of the invention it is clear that the same inventive concept can be applied also in other corresponding beds and apparatus.
Claims (9)
1. An apparatus for inclining the patient-supporting portion (4) of a hospital bed which hospital bed further comprises a body (2) and adevice for lifting and lowering 5 the patient-supporting portion, characterized in that said device comprises a scissors mechanism (6) provided between the body (2) and the patient-supporting portion (4) and the two-armed levers (8, 10) of which scissors mechanism are, functionally connected to means (46, 82, 86) controlling the 10 operation of at least one arm (33).
2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the meane (46) controlling the length of the lever (10) is provided in the portion (33) of one lever (10).
3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the means controlling the length of the arms (88, 90) is disposed in the crossing region to displace the pivot interconnection (32) of the levers (8, 10). 20
4. An apparatus as claimed in any of the claim 1, 2, or 3, characterized in that the means (46) controlling the length of the portion (33) of one lever (10) is an adjustable pneumatic spring.
5. An apparatus as claimed in claim 4, characterized in that at least one of the levers (10) of the scissors mechanism (6) comprises a tube (38) which is telescopically disposed inside a second tube (40) and connected thereto 30 via a pneumatic spring (46).
6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 3, characterized in that the levers (8, 10) of the scissors mechanism (6) are pivotably interconnected via a means (82) determining the 35 locations of the crossing point (32) of the levers and movable in alignment with on® of the levers (8). p814/ell IE 91439
7. An apparatus for inclining the patient-supporting portion of a hospital bed substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings.
8. An apparatus for inclining the patient-supporting portion of a hospital bed substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 5.
9. A hospital bed including apparatus as claimed in any of the preceding claims.
