Abstract
The coupling (1) is intended for securing a handle (5) to a tool (8) e.g. a broom or rake. It comprises a hollow element (2) secured to or part of the tool and provided with an internal taper screw thread (4), to grip the end of the handle. A clamp is provided for the end of the handle, e.g. circumferentially spaced axially projecting resilient lips (10). - These clamps are radially inwardly pressed by a screw bush (3) around the end of the handle, with an internal screw thread (13) fitting on external thread (11) on the element (2). The bush pref. has an internal cone (14) to engage the ends (9) of the lips.
Description
59005 I This invention relates to a helving device used to secure a handle to a tool, as described in the preamble of claim 1, in other words, more particularly to a device allowing an easy and efficient securing of a handle to a tool but capable of being easily removed therefrom, for instance in view of its securing to another tool. Any type of tool could be involved, such as a broom, a rake or others.
Helving devices providing a fast assembly of a handle to a tool are known. Said known helving devices however show TO the disadvantage in that they are only equipped with a simple tightening means, liable to be tightened, in such way that the achieved link with the assistance of said known helving devices is not very reliable. A device as described in the preamble of claim 1 is known in the prior 15 art by means of document DE-U- 8 524 OSO.
In order to solve the aforementioned disadvantage of the known helving devices this invention aims at the development of an improved helving device, involving on the one hand securing means and, on the other hand, additional securing means, all of this to achieve a double 20 helving device characterised in high levels of efficiency and reliability.
For this purpose the invent ion suggests a helving device according to claim 1- The characteristics and advantages of the device according to the invention will clearly appear from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment, solely described as an example without any limiting intent with reference to the attached drawings in which : figure 1 shows the helving device in an unscrewed position ; figure 2 shows a sectional view of the device in figure 1 along the line 11-11 of the latter ; and figure 3 shows said helving device in an assembled state - As shown in the figures or the enclosed drawing, the helving device 1 shown consists mainly of a first hollow element 2 and of a second element 3 in the shape of a threads I plug.
Said first element 2 principally consists in the shape of a hollow cylindrical part, which on the inside is equipped with securing means, such as a toothing or a screw thread 4 liable to receive a handle 5, which can be either screwed on or pressed into it, according to the kind involved. The average diameter D of the toothing 4 is reduced, preferably, gradually downward.
The first element 2 is secured with its lower extremity 6 to a tool or to a part forming one piece with it. In the embodiment shown and described here, the extremity 6 of the element 2 cooperates with a bore 7 made into the body of a broom 8 which has been for instance glued on and/or screwed into the latter, in the latter case possibly with the help of hooRs or other similar elements.
First element 2 is, at its other extremity 9, equipped with tightening means, liable to be tightened and presenting themselves in the shape of elastic strips which can be radially bent but directed axially. First element 2 is equipped with a male thread 11 on its exterior surface.
Said second element 3 is essentially in the shape of a threaded plug, provided with an axial bore 12 in a manner allowing a. perfect adaptation on the handle 5 and on the first element 2. Said second element is threaded, it is to say equipped with a female thread 13 liable to cooperate with the maie thread 11 of first element 2 and shows a conical part 14 liable to cooperate with aforementioned elastic strips 10.
The operation of the helving device 1 is clearly illustrated in the figures 1 and 3 of the enclosed drawing. It essentially consists in that the handle 5 is secured in the first element 2 by pushing and/or screwing its extremity into said toothing 4 whereafter the second element 3 is slid on the handle S and screwed on the first element 2. During the screwing on; said strips are tightened against the handle 5 by means of said conical part, all of which to realize a double link characterized by a high efficiency and reliability.
Obviously, the invention is by no means limited to the method described above as an example and illustrated by the figures in the enclosed drawing, but that it may provide in ail kinds of embodiments of the helving device involved, as far as its shape and sizes are concerned, obviously under the condition of not leaving the scope of the invention as defined by the claims drawn up hereinafter.
Claims (5)
1.- Helving device providing for the securing of a handle (S) to a tooi (8), said device consisting in a first hollow element (2) liable to be secured to a tooi (8) or 5 being part of it and presenting itself in the shape of a cylindrical part equipped with at least a partially conical hollow liable to receive one end of the handle (S) and equipped externally with a thread (11) and equipped internally with securing means (4 J providing for the 10 securing of the handle (5) and a second element (3) presenting itself in the shape of a threaded plug equipped with an axial bore (12) allowing the passage of the handle (5), said second element being provided internally with a thread (13 5 liable to cooperate with the 15 thread (8 3) of the first element (2) and with one part of an internal conical wall (14) the diameter of which diminishes in the direction opposite to the aforementioned part provided with a thread (13), the device consisting of elastic tightening means (10) which are liable to 20 cooperate with the part of the internal conical wall (14) of the second element (3) when screwed on to the first element (2), characterised in that the elastic tightening means (10) are an integral part of the first element (2) and include elastic strips (10) protruding at the 25 extremity of said element (2) where the conical part of its hollow has its largest diameter. said strips (10) being directed axially in a state of rest but liable to bend radially, the extremities of said strips (10) being pushed inward when the second element (3) is screwed on 30 the first element 12) , said strips being foldable at least until their extremities determine an opening whose diameter is equal to the largest diameter of said hollow. 6
2.- Helving device according to the aforementioned claim, characterised in that the strips (10) are foldable at least until their extremities define an opening whose diameter is equal to the smallest diameter of the hollow 5 of the first element (2).
3.- Helving device according to the aforement ioned claim* characterized in that the angle and the axial length of the conical part (14) of the internal wall of the second element (3) and the length of the strips (10) are such 10 that, when the second element (3) is screwed on the first element (2) the extremities of the strips (10) are liable to secure a handle (5) which diameter corresponds with the smallest diameter of the hollow of the first element (2).
4.- Helving device according to one or other of the 15 aforementioned claims, characterized in that the securing means (4) inside the hoilow of the first element (2) are constituted by a toothing.
5. A device according to claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in 20 the accompanying drawings. F. R. KELLY & CO., AGENTS FOR THE APPLICANTS.
