Abstract

A domestic water heating assembly (1) for mounting at a conventional domestic hot water storage cylinder (2) to heat water stored in the cylinder (2). The heating assembly (1) has a plate heat exchanger (3) having a primary side (4) with a primary inlet (7) and a primary outlet (8) for circulation of a heating fluid, preferably from a domestic central heating system, through the primary side (4) of the heat exchanger (3). A secondary side (9) of the heat exchanger (3) has a secondary inlet (10) and a secondary outlet (11) both of which are connected to the cylinder (2) for circulating water with a pump (20) between the cylinder (2) and secondary side (9) of the heal exchanger (3) to heat the water for domestic use. Operation of the pump (20) is thermostatically controlled.

Description

This invention relates to a domestic water heating assembly and in particular to a heating assembly for heating water stored in a hot water storage cylinder of a domestic water heating system.
The term domestic water heating system as used in this specification is taken to mean not only a household water heating system, but also water heating systems used in hotels, office blocks, public sports facilities such as football clubs and the like.
Many domestic water heating systems include a hot water storage cylinder from which hot water is drawn off as required for use. Cold water delivered to the cylinder is generally heated either by a heating coil in the tank through which hot water from a central heating system is passed or alternatively by an electric heating coil in the cylinder. A drawback with these heating systems is the relatively long period of time required to heat cold water in the cylinder to a suitable temperature.
It is an object of this invention to overcome this problem.
According to the invention there is provided a domestic water heating assembly for heating water in a domestic hot water storage cylinder, comprising a plate-type heat exchanger having a plurality of heat exchange plates fixedly mounted and sealed together, the heat exchanger having a primary side with a primary inlet and a primary outlet for circulation of heating water through the primary side of the heat exchanger, the heat exchanger having a secondary side with a secondary inlet and a secondary outlet for connection to the domestic hot water storage cylinder to circulate domestic water between the domestic hot water storage cylinder and the secondary side of the heat exchanger to heat domestic water stored in the domestic hot water storage cylinder, a water circulating pump for circulation of domestic water between the domestic hot water storage cylinder and the heat exchanger, a domestic water temperature control means having a domestic water temperature sensing means for mounting upstream of the secondary inlet of the heat exchanger, to control operation of the pump in response to sensed domestic water temperature upstream of the heat exchanger, and a heating water temperature sensing means to control operation of the domestic water temperature sensing means in response to sensed heating water temperature.
In one embodiment of the invention a domestic water flow control valve is provided to regulate the flow of domestic water through the secondary side of the heat exchanger.
Preferably, the domestic water flow control valve is mounted downstream of the secondary outlet of the heat exchanger.
In another embodiment the heating water temperature sensing means is mounted upstream of the primary inlet of the heat exchanger.
In another embodiment the secondary inlet and secondary outlet of the heat exchanger are connected to a domestic hot water storage cylinder for circulating water between the domestic hot water storage cylinder and the secondary side of the heat exchanger to heat the water.
In a further embodiment the heat exchanger is mounted externally of the domestic hot water storage cylinder.
In a preferred embodiment the pump is mounted upstream of the secondary inlet of the heat exchanger.
In another embodiment the assembly has two or more associated interconnected plate type heat exchangers . The heat exchangers may be connected in series. Alternatively the heat exchangers may be connected in parallel.
In a particularly preferred embodiment the heating water is supplied from a domestic central heating system, the primary side of the heat exchanger being connected to the domestic central heating system. Alternatively a heating circuit may be provided having means to heat the heating water and means to circulate the heating water through the primary side of the heat exchanger.
In another aspect the invention provides a domestic water heating system incorporating a heating assembly as previously described.
In another aspect the invention provides a method of heating domestic water in a domestic hot water storage cylinder, comprising: (a) circulating domestic water by means of a pump between the domestic hot water cylinder and a secondary side of a plate-type heat exchanger; (b) simultaneously passing heating water through a primary side of the heat exchanger to heat the domestic water as it passes through the heat exchanger; (c) controlling the temperature to which the domestic water in the domestic hot water storage cylinder is heated by sensing the temperature of the domestic water upstream of the heat exchanger by means of a domestic water temperature sensing means and controlling operation of the pump in response to the sensed domestic water temperature; (d) sensing the temperature of the heating water by means of a heating water temperature sensing means which is connected to the domestic water temperature sensing means; and (e) controlling operation of the domestic water temperature sensing means in response to the sensed heating water temperature.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a water heating assembly according to the invention, Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic illustration of the heating assembly, in use, Fig. 3 is a wiring diagram for the heating assembly, and Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic illustration similar to Fig. 2 showing an alternative arrangement of the heating assembly.
Referring to the drawings and initially to Figs. 1 to 3 5 thereof, there is illustrated a domestic water heating assembly according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 for heating water stored in a conventional domestic hot water storage cylinder 2 of a domestic water heating system. The heating assembly 1 has a plate type heat exchanger 3 comprising a plurality of corrugated metal heat exchange plates sandwiched together and brazed around a periphery of the plates to fixedly mount and seal the plates together. A primary side 4 of the heat exchanger 3 has a primary inlet 7 and a primary outlet 8. A secondary side 9 of the heat exchanger 3 has a secondary inlet 10 and a secondary outlet 11. Means to circulate domestic water from the cylinder 2 through the secondary side 9 of the heat exchanger 3 comprises a supply pipe 15 for connection between a cylinder outlet 16 at a lower end of the cylinder 2 and the secondary inlet , and a return pipe 17 for connection between the secondary outlet 11 and a cylinder inlet 18 adjacent a top of the cylinder 2. A domestic water flow control valve 19 is mounted in the return pipe 17.
An electrically driven pump 20 is mounted upstream of the secondary inlet 10 of the heat exchanger 3 in the supply pipe 15. It will be noted that the pump 20 is of bronze material.
A domestic water thermostat 22 to sense domestic water temperature is mounted on the supply pipe 15 upstream of the pump 22. The domestic water thermostat 22 controls operation of the pump 20, switching on the pump 20 when the temperature of water in the supply pipe 15 is below a preset value and switching off the pump 20 when the water temperature reaches a preset maximum value, in this case 50°C. Power to operate the domestic water thermostat 22 is controlled by a heating water thermostat 23, mounted at the primary inlet 7 of the heat exchanger 3, the heating water thermostat 23 supplies power to the domestic water thermostat 22 only if the temperature of heating water at the primary inlet 7 is above a preset value, for example, 55°C.
A domestic hot water discharge line 30 leads from a top of the cylinder 2 in conventional fashion to taps 31 and the like. An expansion pipe 32 is also provided.
In use, the heater assembly 1 is mounted at a domestic hot water storage cylinder 2, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The supply pipe 15 is connected to the cylinder outlet 16 and the return pipe 17 is connected to the cylinder inlet 18. A heating water supply pipe 24 from a domestic central heating system (not shown) is connected to the primary inlet 7 and a heating water return pipe 25 of the central heating system is connected to the primary outlet 8 of the heat exchanger 3.
To heat water in the cylinder 3 with the central heating system switched on heating water is circulated through the primary side 4 of the heat exchanger 3. When the temperature of the heating water at the primary inlet 7 reaches 55°C the heating water thermostat 23 supplies power to the domestic water thermostat 22. If the temperature of the water in the supply pipe 15 is below a preset value the domestic water thermostat 22 switches on the pump 20.
Domestic water is circulated by the pump 20 through the secondary side 9 of the heat exchanger 3, the domestic water being drawn from the cylinder outlet 16 through the pump 20, then through the secondary side 9 of the heat exchanger 3 and returned through the control valve 19 to the cylinder inlet 18. The control valve 19 can be adjusted to regulate the rate of flow of domestic water through the secondary side 9 of the heat exchanger 3, thus controlling the temperature rise of the domestic water as it passes through the heat exchanger 3. Domestic water stored in the cylinder 2 is rapidly heated by the heat exchanger 3 and when the temperature of the domestic water in the supply pipe 15 at the domestic water thermostat 22 reaches the preset maximum value, in this case 50°C, the domestic water thermostat 22 switches off the pump 20. As heat is no longer being drawn from the primary side 4, the central heating system will switch off unless it is required for heating water for radiators of the central heating system.
It will be appreciated that the plate type heat exchanger 3 allows the water within the cylinder 2 to be rapidly heated.
Many variations to the embodiment described will be readily apparent. For example, in some cases a pump may not be provided with the heater, the thermal currents created within the heat exchanger 3 being sufficient to circulate water through the heating assembly. Also valve means may be provided to control the supply of heating water to the primary side 4 of the heat exchanger 3, the valve means shutting off the heating water supply from the central heating system when the water in the cylinder 2 has reached the desired temperature.
The heat source need not necessarily be a domestic central heating system. For example the heat source may comprise a separate closed heating circuit comprising for example a boiler and associated pump to circulate heating water through the boiler and through the primary side 4 of the heat exchanger 3. This arrangement may be particularly suitable for use in hotels and in public sports facilities such as gymnasiums, football clubs and the like.
Referring now to Fig. 4 the heating assembly 1 is 5 illustrated diagrammatically again in use in an alternative arrangement for heating water in the cylinder 2. In this case domestic water from the cylinder 2 is passed through the heat exchanger 3 and is returned through the domestic water flow control valve 19 and by way of the expansion pipe 32 to the top of the cylinder .
It will be appreciated that in some cases the heating assembly may comprise a number of the heat exchangers arranged in series or in parallel.
Further the heating assembly may be provided either instead of or in addition to conventional heating coil or immersion type heaters for a domestic hot water storage cylinder.
The heating assembly may be of any suitable materials of construction, however, iron or steel components which would rust and discolour the water are not used.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in both construction and detail.

Claims (16)

1. A domestic water heating assembly for heating water in a domestic hot water storage cylinder, comprising a plate-type heat exchanger having a plurality of 5 heat exchange plates fixedly mounted and sealed together, the heat exchanger having a primary side with a primary inlet and a primary outlet for circulation of heating water through the primary side of the heat exchanger, the heat exchanger having a 10 secondary side with a secondary inlet and a secondary outlet for connection to the domestic hot water storage cylinder to circulate domestic water between the domestic hot water storage cylinder and the secondary side of the heat exchanger to heat domestic 15 water stored in the domestic hot water storage cylinder, a water circulating pump for circulation of domestic water between the domestic hot water storage cylinder and the heat exchanger, a domestic water temperature control means having a domestic water 20 temperature sensing means for mounting upstream of the secondary inlet of the heat exchanger, to control operation of the pump in response to sensed domestic water temperature upstream of the heat exchanger, and a heating water temperature sensing means to control 25 operation of the domestic water temperature sensing means in response to sensed heating water temperature.
2. An assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein a domestic water flow control valve is provided to regulate the 30 flow of domestic water through the secondary side of the heat exchanger.
3. An assembly as claimed in claim 2 wherein the domestic water flow control valve is mounted 11 downstream of the secondary outlet of the heat exchanger.
4. . An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the heating water temperature sensing means is 5 mounted upstream of the primary inlet of the heat exchanger.
5. . An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the secondary inlet and secondary outlet of the heat exchanger are connected to a domestic hot water 10 storage cylinder for circulating water between the domestic hot water storage cylinder and the secondary side of the heat exchanger to heat the water.
6. An assembly as claimed in claim 5 wherein the heat exchanger is mounted externally of the domestic hot 15 water storage cylinder.
7. An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the pump is mounted upstream of the secondary inlet of the heat exchanger.
8. An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim having 20 two or more associated interconnected plate type heat exchangers.
9. An assembly as claimed in claim 8 wherein the heat exchangers are connected in series.
10. An assembly as claimed in claim 8 wherein the heat 25 exchangers are connected in parallel.
11. An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the heating water is supplied from a domestic central heating system, the primary side of the heat »2 exchanger being connected to the domestic central heating system.
12. An assembly as claimed in any of claims 1 to 10 wherein a heating circuit is provided having means to 5 heat the heating water and means to circulate the heating water through the primary side of the heat exchanger.
13. An assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 and 2; Figures 1 to 3; 10 or Figure 4 of the accompanying drawings.
14. A domestic water heating system incorporating an assembly as claimed in any preceding claim.
15. A method of heating domestic water in a domestic hot water storage cylinder, comprising: 15 (a) circulating domestic water by means of a pump between the domestic hot water cylinder and a secondary side of a plate-type heat exchanger; (b) simultaneously passing heating water through a primary side of the heat exchanger to heat the 20 domestic water as it passes through the heat exchanger; (c) controlling the temperature to which the domestic water in the domestic hot water storage cylinder is heated by sensing the temperature of the domestic water exchanger by means temperature sensing upstream of the heat of a domestic water means and controlling operation of the pump in response to the sensed domestic water temperature; (d) sensing the temperature of the heating water by means of a heating water temperature sensing means which is connected to the domestic water temperature sensing means; and 5 (e) controlling operation of the domestic water temperature sensing means in response to the sensed heating water temperature.
16. A method of heating domestic water according to claim 15 substantially as hereinbefore described.
