Abstract

1460646 Granular spray-dried detergent compositions PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 15 Oct 1974 [15 Oct 1973] 44606/74 Heading C5D A homogeneous, granular, spray-dried composition comprises (A) 0À5 to 40% by wt. of a kaolinite or bentonite clay, (B) 2À0 to 60% by wt. of an alkoxylated non-ionic surfactant, or a mixture thereof, at a wt. ratio of B/A in the range of 20 : 1 to 1 : 2, said surfactant being sorbed on said clay at a temperature of at least 150‹ C. Optional ingredients are (C) 1 to 50% by wt. of an anionic, semi-polar, zwitterionic or amphoteric surfactant; (D) 5 to 50% by wt. of an inorganic and/or organic builder including a seeded builder mixture, e.g. Na 2 CO 3 and CaCO 3 ; (E) 0À1 to 5% of a gelling agent, e.g. microfine silica, an alkyl cellulose derivative or an hydroxyalkyl cellulose derivative; (F) 0À3 to 7% of a hydrotrope, e.g. sodium ptoluene sulphonate. Preferably, the non-ionic surfactant (B) and clay (A) are pre-slurried at a temperature of at least 150‹ F., especially 150‹ to 210‹ F., before addition to the aqueous crutcher. The hot slurry is then added to the aqueous crutcher mix which contains one or more of the detergent ingredients (C), (D), (E) and (F) also maintained at a temperature of at least 150‹ F. In the absence of anionic surfactants, the non-ionic and clay may be added directly to the aqueous crutcher mix, which is raised to a temperature of at least 150‹ F. either before or after the addition of (A) and (B). In the presence of anionic surfactants, the non- ionic surfactant and clay must be pre-slurried when the ratio of non-ionic to anionic surfactant is less than 1 : 3 but need not be pre-slurried when the ratio of non-ionic to anionic surfactant is greater than 1 : 3.
