Abstract

990,546. Fuel-injection pumps; injectors; regulating I.C. engines. CUMMINS ENGINE CO. Inc. Aug. 10, 1961, No. 28930/61. Addition to 977,393. Headings F1A and F1B. In a combined fuel injection pump and injector as described in the parent Specification and comprising a plunger 82 reciprocable in a bore 78 and having a passage 93 therein with a radial port 92 positioned to align with a fuel supply port 90 in the bore 78 when the plunger is retracted, a circumferential groove 108 is provided through which liquid is circulated, whereby leakage air from the combustion chamber is entrained by the liquid before it can reach the fuel supply port 90. The liquid also serves to lubricate and cool the plunger and may either be fuel from the injector supply system, or engine oil or other suitable lubricant. A check valve 94 in passage 93 is inertia-actuated and may be spring-loaded. In another embodiment, two spring-loaded check valves are provided.
