Abstract

996,608. Tensioning bale ties. SIGNODE STEEL STRAPPING CO. Dec. 4, 1961 [Dec. 5, 1960], No. 43335/61. Heading F2G. [Also in Division B6] In a machine for sealing overlapped portions of a metal strap S, Fig. 10 (see Division B6), the strap is pulled from a supply roll (not shown) around a box or package (not shown) with the free end of the strap underneath the portion adjacent the supply roll. The free end of the strap S is passed under guide 52 and under gripper bar 62 held upwardly by manual pressure on a flange 72 of a lever 64. The free end of the strap is positioned over a knurled pad 51, Fig. 8, and the lever 64 is released to hold the strap against movement. The overlapped portion of the strap is moved laterally over the bar 62, Fig. 10, and through notch 113, such that the overlapped portion passes between the free end and a tensioning wheel 44, Fig. 8. An operating lever 187, Fig. 14 (not shown), is depressed to lower an air supply valve 172 which is then latched in lowered position. A pin 144, Fig. 6, releases a motor latch 31 to allow a spring 37 to raise motor housing 27. Knurled wheel 44 is moved downwardly while being driven by the motor. The strap S is thus tensioned around the box or package until the motor stalls.. Depression of a lever 207, Fig. 14 (not shown), releases the latch holding the valve 172 in lowered position, such that a spring 182 lifts the valve to closed position. A latch 145, Fig. 9 (not shown), engages a lug 154 to move the motor to its lower inoperative position.
