Abstract

A method of producing a gas of high calorific content comprises gasifying a solid fuel, e.g. coal, with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases and steam and/or CO2 and reacting vaporized hydrocarbons left in, or if desired, added (in liquid form) to the gas, with steam in the presence of a hydrogenating and cracking catalyst (nickel) at a temperature of 450 DEG to 650 DEG C., the volumes of the reactants and the cracking temperature being adjusted so that the reactions are autothermic or slightly exothermic. The hydrogenating cracking step serves to increase the methane content of the gas, e.g. from 8.9 vol. per cent to 28.8 vol. per cent in a specific example, and the liquid hydrocarbons may be added during a washing step which serves to saturate the gas with steam. In the example, open burning coal was gasified at 22 ats. abs. with superheated steam and oxygen in the proportions of 4 kg. of steam per cubic metre (S.T.P.) of oxygen. This gas was cooled to 185 DEG C. with a water wash and 400 gms. of light petrol and 1200 gms. of steam per cubic metre (S.T.P.) of dry gas were introduced into the gas and the catalytic reaction carried out at 600 DEG to 650 DEG C. The resulting gas was cooled and washed to reduce the CO2 content, nitrogen was added, and the gas passed at 360 DEG to 400 DEG C. with steam over a conversion catalyst.
