Abstract

In a process for manufacturing pulp from lignocellulose material e.g. wood chips by a two-stage sulphite digesting process, the cooking liquor for the first-stage is provided by mixing a soluble magnesium-base sulphite liquor and sufficient additional magnesium base in the presence of the lignocellulose material to provide a first-stage soluble cooking liquor having an initial molar ratio of sulphur dioxide to magnesium oxide in the range 1.4-1.85 and an initial pH of 5.9-5.0. The lignocellulose material may be cooked in the presence of the above first-stage liquor until 15-30% of the lignocellulose is dissolved, most of the liquor then being removed (e.g. 60-65% of it), sulphur dioxide added to the digester, and cooking continued to complete the desired fibre liberation of the lignocellulose material. In the first stage, the additional magnesium base is preferably added to the lignocellulose material after addition of the soluble magnesium base sulphite liquor. Further additional magnesium base may be added to the cooking liquor during the first stage in order to maintain the pH in the range 5.9-5.0. The magnesium base may be dry magnesium oxide or hydroxide, aqueous slurries thereof, or may be spent sulphite liquors. By adding additional magnesium base, precipitation of magnesium monosulphite in the liquor is prevented.
