Abstract

The invention comprises a -cyano-a 1-substituted azoalkanes of formula <FORM:0988253/C2/1> in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 are like or unlike aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic, or heterocyclic groups or R1 and R2 taken together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic ring and A is a group of formula -N3, -O(O)CR6, -O(O)CH, -S(O)CR5, -S(S)CR5, -O(O)COR6, -S(S)COR5, -S(O)COR5, -OR6, -CN, -OCN, -SCN, -SR5, or -OOR6 in which R5 is any of the groups which R1 may represent and R6 is as defined in Claim 1, and when A is -OR6 none of the groups R1, R2, R3 or R4 is an aromatic group, which are prepared by reacting an a -halogen-a 1-cyanoazo-alkane, <FORM:0988253/C2/2> in which X is a halogen atom, with (a) a salt of formula YN3, YCN, YCNO, YCNS, YSR5, R5OC(O)SY, R5OC(S)SY, R5CO.SY and R5CS.SY in which Y is a cation or (b) an excess of anhydrous polar compound R6OH, H.COOH, R6COOH, R6OOH and R6O.C(O)OH under liquid conditions in the presence of an acid acceptor and at a temperature below the decomposition of the azoalkane. Examples describe the preparation of 2-cyano-21-thio-cyano-2,21 - azopropane, 2 - cyano - 21 - methoxy - 2,21 - azopropane, 2 - cyano - 21 - ethoxy - 2,21-azopropane, 2,21 - di - (cyano) - 2,21 - azopropane, 2 - cyano - 21 - acetoxy - 2,21 - azopropane, 2 - cyano - 21 - formyloxy - 2,21 - azopropane, 2 - cyano - 21 - propionoxy - 2,21 - azopropane, 1 - cyano - 11 - azido - 1,11 - azocyclo - hexane, and 2-cyano-21-t-butylperoxy-2,21-azopropane. The products may be used as polymerization catalysts.
