A sootblower apparatus for steam boiler plants provided with a jet tube 9 for delivering a blowing medium, a carriage 2 guided in the apparatus frame for movement in the longitudinal direction of the jet tube, the latter being rotatively mounted in the carriage but held against longitudinal movement therein, and a non-cylindrical driving shaft 6 which extends along the path of movement of the carriage and is provided for transferring a longitudinal movement to the carriage and thereby to the jet tube as well as rotary movement to the jet tube, a driving sleeve 5 for the carriage surrounding and movable along the shaft 6 is firmly connected with a coaxial roller cage 22 which supports rollers 23 consisting directly of the outer rings of ball or roller bearings distributed around the periphery of the shaft 6 and provided for rotating the cage 22 and sleeve 5 together with the shaft while rolling along the shaft, the sleeve being mounted for rotation in the carriage but held against longitudinal movement in the carriage. As shown, the sleeve 5 has an integral gear 14 which meshes with a gear mounted on the bearing bushing 10 of the jet tube 9 whereby the tube 9 is rotated, and carries a gear 15 operating a gear transmission 16, 17 and 18 for transferring rotary motion to a gear 19 meshing with a rack 20 on the frame 1 whereby the carriage is moved longitudinally along the frame on a track 4. The shaft 6 which may be solid or tubular and of square, cross-shaped or other cross-section has lostmotion connections in the axial direction thereof.
