985,628. Disc brakes. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSEND. Dee. 23, 1963 [Jan. 15, 1963], No. 50657/63. Heading F2E. In an hydraulic disc brake having a brake pad assembly 8 to which braking force is applied by a piston 5 to urge the pad 9 against a face of a disc 7, the piston has a recess 12 and a block of heat-resisting material 16 is disposed within the recess, the block standing proud of the front face of the piston in the off position of the brake so as to engage the backing plate 10 of the pad assembly and reduce heat transference from the pad assembly to the piston. Preferably the block is of resilient material so that when the brake is applied it is compressed, a space 17 being arranged to accommodate the block when compressed so that under high braking pressure the annular face 14 of the piston contacts the backing plate 10. The block may alternatively be rigid in which case the face of the piston remains separated from the backing plate 10 by the distance a, resulting in minimum heat transference. The brake preferably comprises a pair of opposed cylinders 3, each containing a piston 5, the pistons applying a pair of pads 9 to the opposite faces of the disc.
