Abstract

984,587. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. WELDOTRON CORPORATION. March 22, 1963 [April 16, 1962], No. 11527/63. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] A sealing head for reducing tension on the material adjacent to the seam during the welding and cutting operation comprises a U-shaped clamp 174 which holds the material against a lower bar 158. Subsequent closing of the head causes an inner bar 134 of aluminium to bear against the bar 162 and push it into a groove against springs 164, thus relieving tension of the material during the impulse heating of element 142. The lower and upper sides of bars 134, 162 are covered with an electrical insulating material, the upper one being thin enough to allow heat to quickly flow through it after the welding, and be conducted away by the aluminium. Further strips of insulating material are provided on either side of the tensioned element 142 so that only about two-thirds of the element project. One end of the element 142 is connected by a tensioning spring, to ensure uniform expansion and contraction, to an insulating block and the other end by a conducting block to a terminal.
