Abstract

984,268. Gas-springs. J. E. LINDBERG. May 9, 1961 [July 20, 1960], No. 4328/64. Divided out of 984,266. Heading F2S. [Also in Divisions B7 and G1] A heat-operated mechanical actuator, e.g. for retracting and lowering landing gear and controlling flaps &c. of aircraft, comprises a closed and sealed chamber 150 having fixed and movable end walls 155, 156 respectively which are connected by an extensible side wall in the form of bellows 151, a gas transfer substance 160, e.g. zeolite or metallic hydride, contained within the chamber 150 and which emits or takes in gas with a change in temperature, and electric heating means such as a filament 161, battery 162, and potentiometer 164 to heat the substance 160. The latter may be of the kind which will emit or take in gas respectively with an increase or decrease in temperature or vice-versa. Alternatively a substance may be used which, when heated above a certain temperature, will emit a substantial volume of gas without combustion or detonation the reaction being irreversible. Fig. 4 shows an actuator located between a body 165 and an axle 167 contacts 170, 171 meeting to complete the electric heating circuit 161, 162, 164 and increase the internal pressure within the chamber 150 after a predetermined degree of contraction of the actuator. In a modification, Figs. 5, 6, not shown, the contact 170 is replaced by a resistance which extends vertically from the heat transfer substance 160 and which, after a predetermined contraction of the actuator, is wiped by the contact 171 so that the current through the filament 161, and the corresponding pressure within the chamber 150, progressively increase as the body 165 approaches the axle 167. A suspension system for a vehicle combining four actuators of the kind described with reference to the latter modification, is also described (see Division B7). Specification 961,146 also is referred to.
