Abstract

<PICT:0972335/C6-C7/1> A reverberatory tilting furnace for the continuous production of steel comprises an ore-reducing shaft 12, a scrap-charging platform 15 equipped with reciprocating pushers 17, a shelf 10 associated with a tilting forehearth 2 heated by a burner 38, and a narrow, elongated, tilting, refining furnace 1 heated by a burner 28 and formed with alternately used tap holes 18 at the burner end. Forehearth 2 is tilted by rams 24, 26 and furnace 1 by rams 20, 22, the former having a water-cooled slag bridge 34 near a slag notch 35. Oxygen lances 31 are used for refining and for the introduction of reactive or additive materials. The tap hole 18 in use feeds a casting tundish 46 and pelletized ore containing limestone and fine coal, fuel oil or tar is fed by a conveyer 13 and rotary preheated drum 14 into the shaft 12. Hot gases are extracted through ducts 39 and 40 by a wet cleaner extractor 41 and may be used to fire an air preheater 44 supplying the burners 28, 38 through ducts 45.
