971,644. Bearings. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 2, 1961 [Feb. 5, 1960], No. 3988/61. Heading F2A. [Also in Division B1] In the zone-melting of a rod in a sealed container by induction heating, the holder for supporting one or both ends of the rod comprises a rotary shaft having a quartz bearing and a magnetic coupling. As shown in Fig. 2, the upper holder may comprise a shaft 20 attached to an upper bearing shell 27, the lower bearing shell 25 being attached to a guide sleeve 22. As shown in Fig. 3, the lower holder may comprise a shaft 50 having a tapered portion 49 which forms a bearing at the bottom of a tube 48 to which is attached a guide sleeve 53.
