Abstract

979,464. Electromagnetic relays; arc - rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE AIR BRAKE CO. Feb. 20, 1962 [March 24, 1961], No. 6466/62. Heading H2B. An electromagnetic relay having multiple contact spring sets 20, 22 operated by a movable ladder 30 coupled to the armature 18 is provided with permanent magnets 44, 46 on opposite sides of the contacts to provide magnetic arc blow-out on contact separation. The magnets 44, 46 are polarized in the longitudinal direction of the springs 20, 22 and are coated at 56 with insulating material for protection against the arcs. Like poles may be aligned across the contacts as shown in Fig. 3 or unlike poles may be aligned (Fig. 4, not shown) and in either case the arc will move toward or away from a magnet in dependence on the direction of current flow.
