Abstract
A process for the production of synthetic linear polyamide compositions which are substantially free from colour and of good stability against discolouration caused by heat and light, comprises incorporating into such polyamides, during polycondensation, a stabilizing agent consisting essentially of (1) a phenol stable at the temperature of the polyamide-forming condensation, (2) a salt or ester of an inorganic phosphorus oxy-acid, (3) a manganous salt and (4) either an organic carboxylic acid anhydride or an organic dicarboxylic acid, both of which contain only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, the said components (1), (2), (3) and (4) being such that they will not themselves give rise to colour when incorporated on the polyamide. Specified additives are: (1) 2:5-di-tert.-butyl-hydroquinone, 2:21-methylene-bis (4-methyl -6- tert.-butyl-phenol), 2:2-methylene-bis (4-ethyl -6- tert.-butyl-phenol) and 4:41-butylidene-bis-(6-tert.-butyl -mcresol; (2) sodium hypophosphite and triphenyl phosphate; (3) manganous lactate, oxalate and hypophosphite, (4) adipic, sebacic and terephthalic acid and benzoic and hexahydrophthalic acid anhydrides. The examples describe polymers from hexamethylene diammonium adipate in the presence of: (I) titanium dioxide, 2:5-di-tert.-butyl-hydroquinone, sodium hypophosphite, manganous lactate and benzoic acid anhydride; (II) titanium dioxide, a bistriazinyl derivative of 4:41-diamino-stilbene-2:21-disulphonic acid, 2:5-di-tert.-butyl-hydroquinone, sodium hypophosphite, manganous lactate and benzoic acid anhydride, (III) a bistriazinyl derivative of 4:41-diamino-stilbene-2:21-disulphonic acid, triphenyl phosphate, 2:5-di-tert. -butyl-hydroquinone, manganous oxalate and hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride, (IV) 2:5-ditert. -butyl-hydroquinone, sodium hypophosphite, manganous oxalate and benzoic acid anhydride, (V) titanium dioxide, 2:21-methylene-bis (4-methyl -6- tert.-butyl phenol), triphenylphosphate manganous oxalate and benzoic acid anhydride, (VI) titanium dioxide, 4:4-butylidene-bis (6-tert. -butyl -mcresol), triphenyl phosphate, manganous oxalate and benzoic acid anhydride; (VII) titanium dioxide, 2:21-methylene-bis-(4-methyl -6- tert.-butyl phenol), triphenyl phosphate, manganous oxalate and adipic acid; (VIII) titanium dioxide, 2:21-methylene-bis-(4 -ethyl -6- butyl-tert.-phenol, manganous oxalate and terephthalic acid and (IX) titanium dioxide, 2:21-methylene-bis-(4-methyl -6- tert.-butyl -phenol), triphenyl phosphate, manganous oxalate and sebacic acid. Specifications 652,947, 719,489, 722,724, 793,132 and 861,354 are referred to.
