Abstract
978,586. Artificial legs. VESSA Ltd. Nov. 27, 1963 [Sept. 21, 1962], No. 36004/62. Heading A5R. An artificial leg for attachment to a socket comprises a metal load-bearing member having a lockable ball-and-socket joint at each end for universal adjustment of angularity relative to fixing members, at least one of which includes slidable and lockable parts by which sideways, backwards and forwards adjustment of the fixing member is attainable. The upper fixing member may be incorporated in a knee joint and the lower in an ankle joint. The whole device may be incorporated in a thigh section. The ball parts may be carried by the fixing members. As shown, the load-bearing member comprises tubular sections 1, 2 and 3 which are threaded telescopically. The upper fixing plate 12 carries ball 13 which is locked in position in split bushes 6 and 7 surrounded by clamping rings 10. The lower fixing member comprises plates 16, 17 slidable relatively to one another. Plate 16 has a tapered slot 18 in which the tapered neck, attached to ball 15 in split bushes 8 and 9, is slidable and may be secured by a bolt. The position of plates 16 and 17 may be secured by bolts 21.
