Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula Ar-CR2-CR2-CH2COVi, wherein Ar is phenyl having an ortho position free of substituents, each R is H or alkyl and Vi is vinyl or a substituted ethyl group convertible to vinyl by an elimination reaction. These compounds may be made by the following processes: (a) (Vi=2-dialkylaminoethyl) hydration of Ar-CR2-CR2-CH2C­CCH2N alkyl2 (I); (b) (Vi=2-trialkyl-halogenoaminoethyl) quaternisation of (I) with prior or subsequent hydration; (c) (Vi=vinyl) elimination of dialkylamine from the compound wherein Vi=2-dialkylaminoethyl; (d) (Vi=2-chloro- or 2-bromo-ethyl) addition of HCl or HBr to the compound wherein Vi=vinyl. The examples describe the preparation of 1-diethylamino-6-m-methoxyphenylhexan-3-one and its methiodide, 6-m-methoxyphenylhex-1-en-3- one, 1-chloro- and 1-bromo-6-m-methoxyphenyl-hexan -3- one, 1-diethylamino -6- phenylhexan-3-one, 6-phenylhex -1- en -3- one, 1-diethylamino -6- m-nitrophenylhexan -3- one, 6-m-nitrophenylhex -1- en -3- one, 1-diethylamino -6- m-hydroxy-phenylhexan -3- one and its acetoxy analogue, and 6-m-acetoxyphenylhex -1- en-3-one; the preparation of the necessary intermediates is also described in detail. Specifications 975,593, 975,594, 975,595 and 975,596 are referred to.ALSO:5-Phenylpent-1-yne is obtained by reacting 3-phenylpropyl bromide with sodium acetylide.
