Abstract

Quaternary ammonium polyester polyurethanes hydrophilic foams are produced by a process which comprises reacting polyesters containing tertiary nitrogen atoms and at least two free hydroxyl groups per molecule with organic, di-isocyanates in the presence of water and a monohalohydrocarbon. The straight or branched chain nitrogen-containing polyester is preferably used in conjunction with a straight or branched chain nitrogen-free polyester. Lists of reactants for the preparation of suitable polyesters are given; the tertiary nitrogen atoms being introduced by means of tertiary alkanolamines containing at least two hydroxyl groups per molecule. A mixture of 2,4-tolylene di-isocyanate and 2,6-tolylene di-isocyanate is used as the organic di-isocyanate in the examples. Monohalohydrocarbons specified are alkyl chloride, benzyl chloride and cyclohexyl chloride. A tertiary amine catalyst may be present as also a non-ionic surface-active agent such as an addition product of ethylene oxide with esters of hydroxy fatty acids. Examples are given of the preparation of quaternary ammonium polyester polyurethane foams which are compared with similar foams prepared by omitting the tertiary-nitrogen-containing polyester and/or the monohalohydrocarbon from the reaction mixture. In Example I polyesters are prepared from (a) adipic acid, methyldiethanolamine and trimethylolpropane, and (b) adipic acid, diethylene glycol and trimethylolpropane.
