Abstract

967,273. Cathode materials and processing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Dec. 7, 1960 [Dec. 17, 1959], No. 42109/60. Heading H1D. A cathode, particularly for use in discharge lamps, comprises a conducting core and an emissive material corresponding to the formula wherein RO 2 is a highly refractory metal oxide resulting in transparent sublimation products, and 0.05 < #<0.5. Such a cathode may be made by dipping a core in a suspension of a mixture of a compound having the stoichiometric formula BaO.RO 2 with #R in powdered form, where R stands for thorium or zirconium, and heating. For example, the mixture may comprise BaThO 3 +0.2 Th and be heated to 750‹ C. or may comprise BaZrO 3 +0.25 Zr and be heated to 700‹ C. The core may comprise a tungsten wire filament in the form of a coiled coil with a triple overwound, or a single or double tungsten coil 7, 8 wound on a tungsten shank 9 with the insertion of a thorium sliver. As shown, the inner helix 7 has a greater winding pitch in its middle portion to leave cavities which are filled with the emissive material. Alternatively, the emissive material may be pressed and used in pellet form.
