Abstract

966,522. Self-propelled missiles. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Jan. 31, 1961 [Feb. 2, 1960], No. 3684/60. Heading F3A. [Also in Divisions B7 and F1] An aerial vehicle has a jet-propulsion engine supported externally from the vehicle and having a water-tight casing 17, 18 with a water-tight closure 19 for closing an opening adjacent the exhaust nozzle. The engine is a reverse flow gas-turbine engine fixed at 15a to fuselage 9 provided with a launching rocket motor 11. The closure member 19 mounted on the vehicle by a pin 29 is opened and closed by a rod 31a and a lever 31 pivotally mounted by a collar 30 on pin 29, dogs 34 on collar 30 engaging dogs 35 on a further collar 30 splined to pin 29 and carrying a lever 32 connected by an over-centre spring 33 to the vehicle, a limited lost-motion existing between dogs 34, 35. The spring 33 holds member 19 either in a water-tight closed position against casing 17, 18, or in an open position where it acts as a heat shield. In Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), an additional sliding closure member is mounted at a forwardly located air intake, both closure members may be operated together or independently. Prior to launching the closure member or members are closed and are again closed prior to landing (e.g. in the sea) to protect the engine and to enable the casing to act as a buoyancy tank.
