Abstract
964,405. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 22, 1963 [April 3, 1962], No. 11391/63. Heading H2B. In a vacuum switch the fixed and moving contacts 24, 20 are surrounded by annular arc runners 17, 18 respectively and consist of cupshaped members mounted upon rods 17a, 21, respectively, which make contact with the base portions 44, 40 of the contacts only. Inserts 60 of relatively high resistance stainless steel in the ends of the copper rods serve to produce magnetic loops to aid arc blow out. The arc roots are initially driven out along the skirts 46, 42 of the contacts and are thereafter transferred to the arc runners 17, 18. It is then driven round the runners by magnetic forces set up by a plurality of skewed slots 70 therein. The arc runners 17, 18 are preferably of copper and the contacts of copper-bismuth or copper-lead or like alloys. Conducting screens 15, 75, 76 are mounted in the evacuated envelope to prevent deposition of metal particles, ejected from the contacts during arcing, on the insulating portion 11 of the envelope or upon a bellows 29 forming a seal between the rod 21 and the envelope.
