Abstract

950,034. Selective printing. VIP Inc. May 21, 1962 [June 6, 1961], No. 19400/62. Heading B6F. A card-printing device comprises a platen, printing means spaced from and relatively movable towards said platen, at least one print bar bearing a plurality of indicia spaced along it and lengthwise movable relative to the platen so that any one of said indicia can be positioned in given registration with respect to the platen for printing said one indicia on a card inserted between the platen and printing means when the platen and printing means are relatively moved towards each other, means for moving the bar lengthwise for indexing any desired one of the indicia to a printing position, and means operatively connected to the bar for adjusting an indexed indium at one time to effect accurate registration thereof for a multiplicity of future indexes thereof to its said printing position. A base member 122, Figs. 2 and 3, carries a female die assembly 166 and a platen 135, and hinged to the member 122 at 124 is a top member 120, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, carrying an ink ribbon 131, six parallel male die slides 212, Fig. 8, each carrying a rectangular die 210, Figs. 8 and 10 (viewed upside down), and six type-bars 300, Figs. 8 and 15. A card 156, in which there are to be punched rectangular perforations, whose position represents numerals 0-9, one in each of six adjacent columns and on which are also to be printed the said numerals, is placed on the base member and moved to the left in Figs. 1 and 2 against an abutment formed by a carrier 268 having a detent 282 co-operating with rack teeth 280 and a magnifying glass 266 which scans a scale 262 indicating the columns to be punched, the carrier being set in the desired position accordingly. The die slides are set by knobs 216 so that the desired numerals, which are provided on members connected to the slides, appear through holes 130. The slides are connected to the typebars, each to one, by a series of wires 334, 336 passing over guide blocks 338, 340, so that the type bars are set at the same time to corresponding positions. The members 122, 120 are latched together by members 151, 161 with slight spacing between the mating dies and between the type-bars and platen. By pressing in a knob 138, all the slides and type-bars are locked in position by a bar which passes through notches 226 in each die slide. In full locking position, a blocking plate 238 is moved by a shoulder 242 to uncover a hole 252 in the base member, into which there can now enter a stud 161 on the top member. Depression of a lever 153 causes the members 122, 120 to move together for punching and printing to take place. Each type-bar 300, Fig. 15, has the numerals formed on a member 308 crimped to a body portion 310, and is formed with oppositely opening slots 326, 328, whereby the end portions 302, 304 to which the wires are attached can be bent so as to adjust the position of the numerals for accurate printing. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-The ribbon 131, Figs. 2, 3 and 8, is connected at each end by eyelets 132, 134 to hooks 133 carried on parts 139, 141 of a ribbon mover 127 and urged in tensioning direction by a spring 137. The mover 127 can be slid within limits to adjust the ribbon lengthwise. The ribbon passes down and under the type-bars.
