A fastener to be driven into wood is tubular, at least at its leading end 11, Fig. 5, where it has a sharp edge, and the tube has at least one internal constriction. The constriction 12 may be helical with a corresponding external groove 13 and there is a slot 15 in the flared head 14 so that a screwdriver can be used. In another form, Fig. 3, there is an annular constriction at the leading end with a corresponding external groove, although the external surface could be cylindrical; the flared head, unslotted in this case, is bent back to the shape 6 by a mandrel when the fastener driven in like a nail to fasten the base plate of a glide fastener on a furniture leg.
