In order to optimise the electrode voltage of an electrostatic precipitator, the quanity of energy in each flash-over, i.e. in coulombs is measured, and the value integrated over a period of time, e.g. 1 minute. If the total energy dissipated during the period is below a predetermined value, the electrode voltage is raised, and vice-versa.
