Abstract
955,923. Air cushion vehicles. A. P. PEDRICK. Sept. 28, 1962, No. 36822/62. Heading B7K. A craft operated in close proximity to a surface of flat land or water and supported therefrom by an air cushion generated as a result of forward motion of the craft is characterized in that there is provided a supplementary airstream, which is injected into the main airstream below the base of the craft and is localised so that it is operative only in proximity to that part of the base of the craft which is adapted to be supported at a minimum height above the land or water surface over which the craft is moving, as compared to other parts of the base, when such craft is in a condition of stabilized forward movement. The craft, which may comprise stub wings shown in cross-section, is propelled by a jet propulsion engine E from which compressed air is tapped and fed through a duct F to the rear end of the air-flow channel or cushion compartment beneath the vehicle to create a choking effect at the outlet duct, thereby raising the cushion pressure. In an alternative embodiment, this effect is achieved by increasing the angle of attack of the rearmost stub wing, thereby forming a channel which deflects air from above the wings to the cushion space below. Specification 955,922 is referred to.
