Abstract

954,715. Swashplate pumps. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. March 7, 1963 [March 22, 1962], No. 10988/62. Heading F1A. [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] A variable stroke hydraulic pump comprises a swash plate 11 actuating pistons 9 in a rotating cylinder block 7. The swash plate is biased to a maximum stroke position and its inclination is adjusted in response to the outlet pressure by fluid pressure supplied and exhausted through a passage 27, under the action of a pilot valve 20, acting on a piston (not shown). The pilot valve 20 is loaded by a spring 21, which also ensures rotation of the valve with the cylinder block, and the outlet pressure acts through conduit 24 on the right hand side of the valve. As shown the passage 27 is connected through passage 25 and valve 20 to an exhaust passage 29. When the outlet pressure reaches a predetermined valve, the valve moves to the left to connect conduit 24 to passage 27 through passage 26. The valve 20 is formed with a larger diameter portion 20a which forms an abutment for an annular piston 22. A solenoid operated valve 30 can be opened to admit outlet pressure to a chamber 19a which acts on the piston 22 to move the valve 20 to the left to reduce the pump displacement. The pump may be part of a vehicle transmission and the valve 30 is operated to set zero pump delivery when the engine driving the pump is started.
