943,568. Exciting dynamo electric machines. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 31, 1962 [Nov. 27, 1961], No. 42341/61. Heading H2A. The exciting flux of an A.C. or D.C. machine is made to vary linearly through a range of positive and negative valves by using a circuit arrangement comprising two full-wave rectifiers 12, 13, supplying main field winding 11 in shunt and two series connected auxiliary field windings 16. The rectifier bridges are connected to pass opposing currents through the main field and comprise controlled rectifiers 15. In operation, one rectifier bridge 13 is kept non-conductive while the other 12 supplies the exciting current, when this is reduced nearly to zero rectifier 13 starts to conduct. When the output voltage is zero the currents supplied by the rectifiers are equal and opposite so there is no current in winding 11 and the fluxes produced by the series windings cancel to give zero flux in the machine. As more negative voltage is required, rectifier 13 supplies more current and rectifier 12 becomes progressively non-conductive to give the linear characteristic as shown in Fig. 5. The series fields 16 may comprise only a small number of turns, sufficient to limit the circulating current to a safe value.
