Abstract

941,182. Photo-electric flame detectors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Feb. 23,1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 6860/59. Heading G1A. [Also in Division F4] An apparatus which distinguishes between the presence of a flame due to combustion of liquid fuel at a first burner and the absence of that flame in the presence of flame from one or more adjacent burners comprises means for modulating the flame at the first burner with a predetermined frequency and radiation detecting means which is responsive to the modulated radiation. A transducer 4 is fed with the output of a signal generator 2 which is modulated by unit 30. The modulated signals are applied to the burner barrel 8 and transmitted to the burner head 10, thereby modulating at least the infra-red portion of the flame. The burner barrel is stepped at 12 to increase the amplitude of the vibrations passed to the burner head. A photo-cell 32 feeds to an amplifier 34 tuned to the frequency of the signal generator 2, and this in turn feeds a detector and amplifier 36, this amplifier being tuned to the modulation frequency. A relay 38, when energized operates an alarm and shuts off the fuel supply to the burner. Adjacent fuel burners are modulated at different frequencies and are associated with separate photo-cells and tuned circuits. Specification 941,181 is referred to.
