Abstract
940,679. Valves. PERRETT CONTROL CO. Ltd. Aug. 24, 1961 [Aug. 24, 1960], No. 29238/60. Heading F2V. Fluid flow between an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 is controlled by a lift closure 7 which is urged on to its seat by a spring 12 and inlet pressure acting on the upper surface of piston 14 secured to the hollow valve stem 9; the inlet pressure passes through the stem 9, which includes a calibrated orifice 21. The inlet pressure acts directly on the closure 7 in a direction to open it but since the exposed area of the latter is less than the area of the upper surface of the piston 14 the valve remains closed. The spring may act on the piston instead of the closure member. Upon admitting a control pressure through a port 22 to act on the underside of the piston 14 the closure 7 is unseated, the fluid above the piston being expelled into the inlet at a rate dependent upon the size of the orifice 21 which thereby determines the speed of valve actuation. The valve is reclosed by reducing the control pressure. The piston may be of the differential type. Different rates of valve opening and closing may be effected by a dual-passage orifice, one passage being closed by a ball non-return valve; alternatively a single passage orifice may be used with a ball valve which is fully opened by flow in one direction and partially closed by flow in the opposite direction. The bonnet bore through which the stem slides has a vent passage 25 intermediate a pair of seals 23.
