Apparatus for applying adhesive tape to cartons comprises a tape applicator mounted for movement in a vertical plane in the apparatus and operable to apply a length of tape to a carton passed thereunder by a conveyer, height control means operatively connected to the tape applicator and actuated by the moving carton to move the tape applicator to an operative position for applying tape to the carton, and guide means for automatically aligning the carton in its desired lateral position relative to the tape applicator as the carton is fed towards and under the applicator. In one form a tape applicator 9, Fig. 4, consists of a dispensing roll, movable guide and pressure roller and a solenoid operated cutting knife and is provided with rollers 12 for vertical movement in guides 10. A pair of heightcontrolling bars 14 movable with and located below the applicator 9, have inclined portions 18 connected by members 16 to the applicator 9, such that when the bars 14 rest on top of a carton 17, the applicator 9 is in its correct location for applying tape across the adjacent ends of the top closed flaps of the carton. A pivoted counterbalance arm 19 carrying an adjustable weight 20 is connected to the applicator 9 to facilitate movement thereof. Thus irrespective of the height of the carton, the applicator 9 is automatically moved to its correct tape applying position when the carton passes under the height controlling bars 14. The guide means for aligning the cartons laterally consist of a pair of elongated members 23, Figs. 4, 6, connected by a linkage system and urged towards each other by a spring 34 on a common biasing device 29. The arrangement is such that whilst the movement of the cartons is not impeded, the spring-urged members 23 will align the cartons laterally so as to cause the tape to be applied in the appropriate lateral position. In another embodiment the applicator 9, Fig. 7, is mounted on a cradle framework 36 for oscillating movement in the main framework 5 between a lower position and a higher position relative to the conveyer 8, the parallel lower members of the framework 36 constituting the height control bars which are moved upwardly together with the applicator 9 in accordance with the height of the carton. Adjustable counterbalance weights 40 and lateral aligning means 23 are again provided. In other embodiments, Figs. 10-14 (not shown), a fixed lower applicator is also provided for applying tape to the bottom side of the carton.
