Abstract

948,976. Electrostatic transducers. APEX CORPORATION. March 1, 1961 [March 11, 1960], No. 7516/61. Heading H4J. An electrostatic earphone has perforated electrodes, a light-weight diaphragm, and a perforated back plate, so that sounds produced externally may pass through the earphone. As shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the diaphragm is made of a light-weight material with a resistivity of about 10<SP>10</SP> ohms/square, is about 0.0005 inches in thickness and is clamped against the conductively coated surface of an insulating mounting ring 36 by a rubber ring 46 recessed in a second insulating mounting ring 27. Each mounting ring carries a perforated electrode 21, 24, which may be of coated insulator or of metal. Mounting ring 27 carries an insulating back plate 18 which is perforated and mounts a pivot bar 16 in bearings 17, the bar 16 being fixed to an adjustable stirrup 13 of a head harness (see Fig. 1, not shown). A sound absorbing pad 20 lies between the back plate 18 and the electrode 21 to damp out resonances. A foam rubber ear cushion 52 surrounds the mounting rings and covers part of the electrode 24. Leads 56, 57, 58, clamped to the back plate 18 by a bracket 63 connect with the electrodes 21 and 24 or their conductive coatings and to the diaphragm. The receiver may be driven by the secondary of a transformer, the ends of which connect with the electrodes and a centre tap from which connects with the diaphragm via a polarizing potential source and a damping resistor. The diaphragm may be coated with an anti-static substance such as stannous chloride to ensure charge migration. A valve circuit to drive the receiver is shown in Fig. 7, input being applied by way of triode and pentode shapes. Only one electrode is actively driven, the other being earthed. The diaphragm is polarized from the 700-volt supply 127. To compensate for a diminishing response at high frequencies, feed-back is taken from the active electrode of the receiver to the cathode of the triode.
