Abstract
944,858. Switching systems including static transformers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 19, 1962 [July 11, 1961], No. 25123/61. Heading H2H. A circuit arrangement for supplying a load L from a high power, high voltage direct current source V1 over a circuit breaker C includes an electromagnetic device T, the winding N1 of which is connected between the source V1 and the circuit breaker C so as to carry the load current which drives the core P of the device into saturation in one direction and the winding N2 of the device being connected to an auxiliary low voltage direct current source V2 over a switch S such that the current flowing in the winding N2 when the switch S is closed in normal operation is such that the core P is driven in saturation in the opposite direction to that of the winding N1. Thus opening of switch S causes the core P to move from one saturation state to the other so inducing an e.m.f. opposite to the applied voltage V1 during which time the circuitbreaker C can be opened under reduced current conditions. The core P is made of material with a rectangular hysteresis loop.
