Abstract
944,679. Shaft couplings; universal joints; flexible shafts. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. Feb. 21, 1962 [March 7, 1961], No. 6791/62. Headings F2A and F2U. Two parts of a shaft capable of relative axial movement are joined by torsion bars parallel to the shaft axis and having at least one of their ends supported for axial movement in a longitudinal ballbearing. Two universal joints 1, 2 are coupled by a plurality of torsion bars 3 rigid with a flange 2<SP>1</SP> on the joint 2 and sliding in axial ball-bearings 4 in a flange 5 rigid with the joint 1, to allow relative axial and torsional movement between the joints. The rods 3 pass through a disc 7 to limit bending to the portion 8. The disc 7 is sealed to a rubber boot 1a to protect the axial bearings which may have a radially inwardly sprung outer race sleeve to obviate back-lash. The ball-bearings may be rubber mounted to allow axial misalignment of the shafts, or they may be omitted. The invention may be applied to shafts without universal joints.
