944,261. Pivoting and hinging seats and lids. SHIRES & CO. (LONDON) Ltd. Oct. 1, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961], No. 33981/61. Heading E1C. A hinged seat a for a watercloset or sanitary pan comprises a one-piece moulding in polypropylene which includes seat and base portions b, d joined together as shown in Fig. 1 by an integral flexible web c of reduced thickness, the portion d being secured to the pan, and the web c providing a hinge about which the portion b can swing relative to the portion b. The portions d, b and the web c are moulded to lie in the same plane so that with the portion d attached to the pan, the portion b is in its lowered position relative to the pan when the web c is unflexed. The seat a is clamped to the pan by a clamping bar g (Figs. 5 and 6) mounted on the base portion d and bolts h to pass through the portion d and through holes in the pan top secured by nuts. A hinged lid may be combined with the seat a which comprises a one-piece moulding in polypropylene and is made up of a base portion k joined to a lid portion j by an integral flexible web l, which provides a hinge about which the portion j can swing relative to the portion k which is mounted between the portion d and the bar g, the bolts h passing through the portions k and d. The lid-base portion k is preferably of L section, being then moulded as shown in Fig. 6, a portion m thereof being mounted on the portion d so that the portion j extends upward when raised relative to the pan when the web I is unflexed. In a modified arrangement a hinged seat has a hinged lid in combination therewith, both being formed in the same one-piece moulding, the seat-base portion affording a hinge base common to both the seat and lid and having the lid portion joined thereto by a second integral flexible web.
