Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0933715/IV(a)/1> (wherein R represents hydrogen, an alkali metal ion or a C1-4 alkyl group, X represents a formyl or acetyl group, and Y is a radical found in attachment to the a -carbon atom of a known naturally occurring a -amino acid containing only one amino group and carbon, hydrogen and oxygen as the only other elements), and the preparation thereof by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0933715/IV(a)/2> with a mixed anhydride derived from an acid <FORM:0933715/IV(a)/3> and a C1-4 alkyl ester of chloroformic acid, or with an azide <FORM:0933715/IV(a)/4> Partial racemization occurs with the first method, giving a mixture of diastereoisomers (also comprised by the invention), but not with the second method. When R in the final product is to be hydrogen it should be an alkali metal ion in the starting material, the acid being liberated from the resulting salt. Pharmaceutical preparations comprise the foregoing compounds and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Specification 750,155 is referred to.
