Abstract
931,949. Control of motors. CARL ZEISSSTIFTUNG, [trading as C. ZEISS [Firm of]]. Oct. 23, 1961 [Nov. 2, 1960], No. 37841/61. Class 38 (3). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] A valve system e.g. for connecting a high and a low vacuum pump at 6, 7, respectively, Fig. 1, in a required sequence to a chamber 8 such as an electron microscope, comprises an open-ended sleeve 5 axially slidably reciprocated by a mechanical device including a ratchet and pawl or, Fig. 2, an electric motor 16 via gearing 17- 19 and screw-and-nut 20, 21, spaced annular packings 2, 3, 4 whereby the chamber 8 is connected to low vacuum between 3 and 4 and through a sleeve when the sleeve is moved to the left, and to the high vacuum when the sleeve is moved to the right through a position closing both openings 6, 7, as shown. Gear 17 also drives a screw 24 whereby a nut 25 actuates limit switches 27-29 incorporated in a motor control circuit containing three cold cathode tubes and relays and in which the connection, low to high vacuum is effected through a vacuum switch 34. On starting the low vacuum pump, a delay in ignition of the first cathode tube allows any impairment of pre-vacuum in the valve closed pump lines 6, 7 to act via the vacuum switch 34 to switch off the voltage. The motor 16 then moves valve 5 to the left, a relay closes back-up valve 31 and the low vacuum pump exhausts the chamber 8. A delay in the second cathode tube ignition before the valve is reversed allows any vacuum impairment to switch off the voltage. On passing through the central valve position, a limit switch opens back-up valve 31 and in the right-hand position, both pumps evacuate the chamber, and through switch 34, the valve returns to the central closed position when the evacuation is complete. Impairment of the vacuum switches off the voltage and a chamber vent valve may be opened via a further switch and relay.
