Abstract

931,231. Shock-absorbers. W. A. DUCKETT. Sept. 21, 1961 [July 26, 1960], No. 25973/60. Class 108(3). A telescopic hydraulic shock absorber comprises a piston 17 slidable within a closed cylinder 10 and having a piston-rod 14, 15 with an annular axial passage 16 which provides the sole communication between a permanently wholly externally-located reservoir 33 and one or more valve-controlled passages 18 in the piston. On each compression stroke of the shock absorber hydraulic fluid is displaced from one side of the piston to the other and to the reservoir via said axial passage or passages while on the rebound strokes there is a flow of liquid through the piston 17 in the reverse direction and from the reservoir. The passages 18 are controlled at each face of the piston 17 by disc-type valves 24, 25 which normally have their outer edges closed against outer seatings 21, 23 and are urged at the inner edges by star springs 26, 28 acting respectively through annular sleeves 27, 29 into contact with inner seatings 20, 22. The annular passage 16, which communicates with the passage or passages 18 through bores 19, extends through a guide rod assembly 13 which closes the upper end of the cylinder 10 and opens into the reservoir 33 which is divided by a diaphragm 34 into liquid and air spaces and is formed in the upper end of a dust shield 32 carried by the rod 15.
