Abstract
930,548. Valves. MAROTTA VALVE CORPORATION. Nov. 4, 1959, No. 37473/59 Class 135. During the closing movement of a pilot-controlled main closure 20, Fig. 1, interposed between an inlet 15 and an outlet 16, the controlled fluid also flows through passages 56, 58 and 60, past a check valve 62 and a pilot valve 44, through a restriction 68 in a closed check valve 66, and a passage 70 into a chamber 28 behind the closure 20 to assist a spring 32 to seat the closure 20. To open the latter a solenoid 52 is energized to move the pilot valve 44 to the right whereupon fluid flows from chamber 28 through passage 70, check valve 66, the pilot valve 44, and a further check valve into the outlet 16 via passages 82 and 79 to act upon the closure 20 and urge it to the left. Two more check valves are provided to enable the direction of flow through the main valve to be reversed without the necessity for reversing the operation of the pilot-valve solenoid. The main and pilot valve casings, which are of aluminium or an aluminium alloy, are interconnected whilst the main closure 20, Fig. 6, has a head 110 of plastic material which is tapered to match the seat 22. The closure 20 is provided with guide vanes 118. The solenoid 52 incorporates an armature 154 connected by an adjustable plunger 161 to the pilot valve 44, which is balanced and of the shuttle-type loaded to the position shown by an adjustable spring 50; the pilot valve 44 is contained in a two-part sleeve.
