Abstract

934,284. Ratchet clutches. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. April 13, 1962 [April 28, 1961], No. 15410/61. Class 80 (2). A ratchet clutch comprises a ratchet-wheel 6 connected to a driving shaft 5 and a plurality of tooth engaging members 10 constrained to move outwards and upwards in a hollow part 7 connected to a driven shaft 8, the members 10 engaging the wheel 6 by gravity below a predetermined speed and being centrifugally disengaged above that speed. The members 10 may be plate-like detents engaging sloping surfaces 9a in the hollow part, or may be balls contained in sloping drillings. Preferably, an even number of teeth on the ratchet-wheel and an even but smaller number of engaging members are provided.
