Abstract
<PICT:0934015/IV(a)/1> A method of dyeing a fibrous strand comprises feeding a strand of fibres by engaging it between moving converging smooth surfaces and applying resilient back pressure against the strand to retain it against the said surfaces as it is forced out between them, applying dye to the strand prior to contact with the surfaces or to at least one of said surfaces in an amount not greater than the amount that the strand is capable of absorbing as the dye is forced through the fibres by contact with the said surfaces, releasing the strand from said back pressure and treating the dye to fix the dye to the fibre. The dye may be applied in a solid colour, or to form a continuous stripe, or several colours may be applied so that the strand is dyed with stripes of different colours. Apparatus for performing the method is as shown and in operation a strand S is fed from a source through a condenser 21 into the nip N of rolls 15, 17 which are rotated to draw the strand through and force it into the crimp box 23 and past the crimp gate 25. Dye is fed at a metered rate through pipes 41 and 43 so as to supply dye at a known and constant rate to the felt pads 31 and 33 and thence to the surfaces of rolls 15, 17.
