Abstract

920,664. Burglar alarm systems. C. P. DE M. PORRITT. Oct. 17, 1961 [July 21, 1960], No. 25513/60. Class 118. A safe, a strongroom, or the like comprises a substantially gas-tight enclosure, means for maintaining a super-atmospheric or a subatmospheric pressure in the enclosure, and an alarm system actuated by the opening of one or more pressure-sensitive switches within the enclosure, the said switches being operated by a change in the pressure in the enclosure and the alarm system including a timing device to make it inoperative at predetermined times. In the example shown, an air-tight enclosure comprises a housing 3, a pipe 4 and a casing 5. The housing 3 encloses a safe 1 mounted on blocks 2, and a pressure-sensitive switch 21. The casing 5 contains an air compressor 8 and the main parts of an alarm system comprising a pressuresensitive switch 20 connected in series with the switch 21, a solenoid-operated switch 18, a time switch 17, and a battery 16. The compressor 8 receives atmospheric air through an inlet 10 and injects air into the casing through a non- return valve 11, a safety-valve 13 being provided in the casing as shown. A pressuresensitive switch 12 controls the compressor such as to maintain a pressure in the enclosure ranging between 2 and 4 1b./in.<SP>2</SP> (gauge). When the pressure in the enclosure falls below 1.5 lb./in.<SP>2</SP> (gauge) either or both of the switches 20, 21 open, causing the switch 18 to close and actuate an alarm bell 15. The battery 16 supplies the alarm bell through the time switch 17 which opens at predetermined times. The tube 4 is concealed in a wall 6 and is made of glass or brittle plastic material, and may contain dummy wires in addition to those leading to the switch 21. The alarm bell is mounted outside of the gas-tight enclosure and may be operated by clockwork (not shown). The safe itself may form a part of the gas-tight enclosure without being housed in a secondary container. The alarm bell may be replaced by a device (not shown) giving a visible warning.
