Abstract

In the manufacture of pigmented regenerated cellulose filaments by spinning viscose mixed with a pigment dispersion into a coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid, the pigments are dispersed in a mixture of water, a primary aliphatic amine containing 12 to 18 carbon atoms, and one or more amino compounds having the general formula:- <FORM:0926707/IV(a)/1> in which R represents an alkyl radical containing 12 to 18 carbon atoms, R1 represents -CH2CH2COONa and R2 represents hydrogen or -CH2CH2COONa. The pigmented filaments may be multi- or mono-filaments and may subsequently be cut into staple fibres. The primary aliphatic amine may be lauryl or oleyl amine. R may represent an alkyl radical derived from coconut oil, and R2 may then represent hydrogen. Alternatively, R may be an alkyl group derived from tallow and R2 may then represent -CH2CH2COONa. A list of white inorganic pigments (of which titanium dioxide is preferred) which may be used is given and also a list of coloured pigments. If coloured threads free from dichroism are to be produced, the pigment dispersion should contain a small proportion of a white inorganic pigment in addition to the coloured pigment. The presence of the amino compounds in the viscose prevents or minimizes the precipitation of the pigments in the viscose when the latter is allowed to stand undisturbed.
