An alloy steel contains in percentage by weight:- .C.0.35-0.47 .Mn.0.54-1.20 .P.0.025 maximum .S.0.025 maximum .Si.0.60-1.50 .Cr.0.80-1.50 .Mo.0.15-0.40 may be replaced by W in the ratio 2 parts W ­ 1 part Mo .V.0.10-0.25 .Co.0.85-1.34 but may be absent when V is more than 0.15 .Fe.balance An exemplified heat-treatment consists of austenitizing at 1700 DEG F., quenching in oil and tempering at 600 DEG F., while in a modification thereof the steel is quenched into molten steel at 400 DEG F.
