Abstract

913,979. Change-speed gear; ratchet clutches. ISEMAN, R. W. Aug. 4, 1961, No. 28421/61. Class 80 (2). A change-speed gear for a pedal cycle comprises two sprockets 13, 15 driven at different speeds from two chain-wheels fast with a pedalcrank, the former of which sprockets drives through a one-way clutch an output hub 7 at low speed whilst the other sprocket 15 drives the hub 7 through a disconnected one-way clutch having a ratchet 20 fast with the sprocket 15 and a pawl 22 integral with a centrifugal weight 21 pivoted at 23 to the hub 7, which pawl engages the ratchet above a predetermined output speed for upshift. The weight 21 is biased inwardly by a spring 26 and is connected by an arm 29 to a diametrically opposed counterweight 27 so that both weights move in unison.
